Wii U

1. No. The GamePad can only be used to play and operate games and applications designed for or around its use, so Wii games can only be played with whatever Wii peripheral(s) they require.

2. I don't know, since I haven't yet played anything with an explicit option to save. However, with games optimized for GamePad play (i.e. that can be played solely on the GamePad if desired), most menus are accessible from the GamePad.
 
1. GamePad is only supported in Wii U games, in order to play Wii games, you must use Wii's Controllers (all of them are acceptable, including the Balance Board).
2. The GamePad is a controller, no Handheld. Everything you 'save' on it, happens on the Wii U itself.
You'll need an SD Card, in order to export QR Codes, Mii Images, etc.

It's a minor inconvience. Once you learn how to be patient and wait the extra 5-15 seconds, the experience is a lot of fun. I do love the HD, and if it requires just a small bit of time to load, then so be it. At least once the game/application is opened, it doesn't load for every function you do within the app/game.

I just wish that whenever this is an update that I didn't have to wait like 40 minutes for it to update. Usually I watch TV when that is happening.

Luckily for me, when an update is going on, I'll have Sticker Star to play in the meantime. So updates can take a few hours and I probably won't care.
 
you know that's a horrid logic, right? If even simple apps take forever to load, then the company should be called out on it and not be allowed to get away with such terrible service.

I mean everyone was down on the PS3 for this bullshit, rightfully so. What makes the Wii U any different?

I said luckily for me I have another game to play in the meantime. Just because I said it doesn't effect me much/at all, doesn't mean it's not bad that updates take forever.

Although I didn't care about the updates for the PS3 either, they can take an hour or so and I'd be fine, it's not like it's hurting me, I have other things I can do in the meantime (Make food, go for walk, play 3DS or just lay down for a while).

Updates can take a long time, depending on how much it needs to download, how the speed is on both sides, and from what location.
The thing is, however, you can't see how much anything is downloading on a Wii U, just a process bar, and some percentage.
 
Too bad the Wii U is too expensive for my family :-\ We had a house fire earlier this year and we're spending money to get replacements for stuff that was in our garage and attic (Christmas stuff was in attic)

The updates are actually not that often. I would expect a few while the Wii U's debut is out, but once the first two months of the release comes out, I'm sure that there were will be no need for many updates, and I do expect the updates to go faster. In fact, the last update was only 40 minutes, compared to the 60 minute one last time.

i was downloading an update in the background and all that

so i hate how it always says "Your data has finished downloading"

i learned that the way to get rid of that is to actually play the thing and stuff

so the progress went up a little bit like 1/4 of the way

and then the "Data estimation clock" or whatever it's called just slowly went up over time

it's been 40 minutes and it's still going up

is this normal
 
That's why it's called, Estimated Time.
It's basically time that's calculated, based on the size of the file, your Internet speed, your HDD/SSD (or in this case, Flash Memory) reading and writing speed, the Internet speed you're downloading from (unless it's installing), and their HDD's reading and writing speed (unless it's installing).
So if you have awesome Internet speed, but you have a crappy Hard Disk, it's still slow.

So yes, it can be normal, although Flash Memory is generally many times faster than Hard Disks.
 
Do you have Windows 7 or Windows 8?
If so, just drag and drop a big file to your SD Card, USB Stick, or whatever else.
Note how the lines go up and down, that's how these times are calculated.
It's basically what I already said, but more as in "Look at it yourself.".
 
okay i left it on overnight and it now says 18:25

i don't wanna turn off the wii u, but i'm contemplating doing so
 
I think if you unplug it during an update it'll get bricked. Smarter to just wait it out or find a solution on the Internet.
 
but it's been going like this since 10:22 cst last night

about 10 hours so far
 
It isn't supposed to brick while Downloading, it's the Install process, that can be dangerous in this case.
