Koopa's Robot Romp

Day 9 - "Directive? Classified."
Today I would like to talk about the queen of all robots, EVE from the Pixar movie WALL-E!

It was really tough picking between WALL-E himself and EVE for this project, but in the end EVE is my favourite Disney character so here we are!

WALL-E is a movie that needs no introduction, it is one of the best (if not, the best) Pixar movies and is about as iconic as it gets when it comes to robots. I actually have briefly spoken about WALL-E during day 4 when I brought up how AUTO is directly inspired by HAL 9000, but of COURSE I was going to have a WALL-E character in here, it would be an actual crime if it was omitted.

In the movie itself EVE is titular character WALL-E's love interest. In the year 2805 she is sent down to earth as a probe, searching for any signs of life and whilst she is down there she encounters the lonely WALL-E. At first EVE is hostile to him, but eventually warms up to him and treats him as a friend. At one point WALL-E even saves EVE from an incoming dust storm, taking her back to his trailer where he shows her a small plant he found. Of course, being a form of life, this plant sets EVE off and she enters a state of deactivation before she is picked up and taken back to the Axiom (with WALL-E as a stowaway). As the movie progresses she gets closer with WALL-E, eventually culminating in the two sharing a kiss and a zero-gravity dance in space.

Throughout the movie EVE shows countless acts of determination and proves how determined she is to accomplish her mission. Her and WALL-E end up (accidentally) causing a robot revolution and the two (with the help of some friends, both human and robots) are eventually able to thwart AUTOs scheme, allowing humankind to return to Earth. The last time we see EVE in the movie is at the end of the credits, where she and WALL-E are holding hands together under a tree, overlooking a very green Earth.

Did you know?
  • EVE stands for 'Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator'
  • EVE's design was inspired by Apple products. She was even designed by the same person responsible for the design of the iPod!
  • EVE is voiced by Elissa Knight who is not an actress but rather a Pixar employee
  • WALL-E's pet cockroach is named Hal, another reference back to HAL 9000! (This isn't directly related to EVE, I just forgot to mention it on day 4)

Why I love EVE
EVE, to me, is an incredibly interesting character with a fun personality and a sleek design. Her relationship with WALL-E is simply adorable and I love the contrast of her both having an incredibly serious side and an outgoing, fun having side.

So, tomorrow is the finale! If you've made it this far, I really appreciate you reading all of these! Tomorrow I've got a real big one lined up for the final day. No like seriously, they're huge.

Day 10 - "You're mistaken if you think your powers are a match for Mechagodzilla."
Day 10! The grand finale! I guess the quote kind of gives away who I'll be speaking about today, Godzillas robot doppelganger: Mechagodzilla!

So Mechagodzilla's origins can be traced back to the 1966 animated series The King Kong Show which, in two episodes, featured a mechanical doppelganger of King Kong named Mechani-Kong. Just one year later Toho would go on to create their very own King Kong movie (they previously had used the character in the 1962 movie King Kong vs. Godzilla), and in this movie Mechani-Kong would star as one of the villains. Jumping forward to 1974 Toho would go on to release Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, the very first movie to feature the titular Mechagodzilla who was directly inspired by Mechani-Kong.

Being a Godzilla-series character Mechagodzilla has many variations, and is one of the few Toho monsters to have appeared in every era. Pictured above are the Showa, Heisei, Millenium and Monsterverse Mechagodzillas. In-universe Mechagodzilla's origins depend on the depiction of the character, for example the Showa Mechagodzilla was created by an alien race to assist in taking over Earth. The Heisei Mechagodzilla however was created by the Japanese military to help defend Japan from Godzilla and other monsters. Each one has it's own backstory and lore.

Mechagodzilla is one of Godzilla's biggest rivals (only beaten by King Ghidorah) and is part of the 'Toho Big 5' (consists of Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla and Rodan) so it is safe to say that Mechagodzilla is one of the most important kaiju characters of all time. Mechagodzilla is the robot doppelganger, even though he was not the very first, without any doubt he popularised the concept. He is always portrayed as a formidable opponent, having gotten the upper-hand on Godzilla and other monsters multiple times. Abilities-wise he is similar to Godzilla but with a much more robotic twist, in place of Godzilla's atomic breath he has a laser beam (Note: The name of Mechagodzilla's laser beam ability changes depending on the depiction) which either comes from his mouth or his eyes, all Mechagodzillas also feature some kind of missiles or rockets and many also have the ability of flight. All versions of Mechagodzilla are incredibly durable and have some type of defensive measure, whether it be the ability to deploy an inpenetrable barrier or being coated in diamonds.

Did you know?
  • Mechagodzilla was the first of Godzilla's rivals to have derived from Godzilla himself
  • In Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) Mechagodzilla is possessed by the spirit of King Ghidorah, funnily enough this is not the first time this has happened to a Mechagodzilla as in the 2002 movie Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla he is possessed by the spirit of the original 1954 Godzilla!
  • The Showa Mechagodzilla suit is the only kaiju suit from the Showa era to still exist to this day as the rest had all rotted away due to the materials they were made out of.
  • Mechagodzilla was created in response to the poor performance of the previous Godzilla film Godzilla vs. Megalon which took a very silly and goofy approach to the series
  • Mechagodzilla has gone on to inspire countless other robot doppelgangers, for example Metal Sonic from the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise (in case you're wondering, I've never played the Sonic games which is why Metal Sonic is not included in this project)

Why I love Mechagodzilla
To be blunt, he's just REALLY cool. Also like my two favourite things are reptiles and robots, and Mechagodzilla is literally just those two combined. How much more perfect can it be? Also in case you're wondering what my favourite Mechagodzilla is... that's a very tough question but I think it would be a tie between the Showa Mechagodzilla and the Monsterverse one.

And that is the end of this project! This has been a fun 10 days, I've enjoyed writing about these guys (even if I haven't been writing a ton). I think maybe I'll do this again in the future with another character archetype (Koopa's Reptile Rumble, maybe?), also just want to say if you like this idea and want to do your own spin on it then feel free!

So once more thank you all for reading, and to celebrate finishing this project here is a Robo Troopa who unfortunately was not nearly an important enough character to warrant getting his own day but I still wanted to bring up because it is literally a Robot Koopa.
