Chatroom Problem

When I try to enter the chatrooms via the chat article on Userpedia, I get an error message that says that OS X does not accept addresses starting with "irc". Since it's virtually the only way for me to get into chatrooms besides #mwchat and #userpedia, can somebody please help me this?
