May I answer your Chekov question with a counterquestion: Why do you like Picard and Riker so much? And there are only 2 DS9 characters, unless you count Q. Worf is DS9, as well as Sisko.

Worf and Q debuted in TNG, so they don't count as DS9 characters.

Picard is an awesome character because he never loses his cool, he uses clever strategies as well as brute force, he can fence, he makes awesome inspiring speeches, he isn't a sucker for women (cough Riker cough), and he is a great leader who every single person on the Enterprise and even some off of it respect and look up to.

I don't like Riker as much as Picard, but he is a capable leader who excels at out of the box thinking, and he's better with people than Picard.

Data is my real second favorite, basically because of his android abilities and the fact that he acts so human sometimes and he is the only one who doesn't notice. He also has the most character development of the entire Trek cast and it is interesting to watch the first episode of TNG and then watch some of the later ones and notice how much he's changed.

Worf has the interesting Klingon heritage and he also is an excellent warrior, he also manages to be funny because of how awkwardly he acts sometimes, especially with his son Alexander.

Janeway and Archer are from Voyager and Enterprise, which were even worse than DS9.

Chekov, while somewhat akward compared to the other TOS characters, is a strongly capable ensign (commander in the movies), and I enjoy watching his navigational and tactical skills on-screen. It is unlikely that the Enterprise would have gotten out of some sticky situations without him (cough Star Trek 11 cough)

My other fave: Dr. McCoy is an interesting character, mostly from his rivalry with Spock. His one-liners have spiced up a show that would otherwise be humorless. Not to mention that he is a skilled doctor, and per my last sentance for Chekov.

I really do not like Riker. He's a bit of a jerk, and has little to no leadership skills, witch a Number One is supposed to have. Putting it this way, Riker is to me what Troi is to you.

Riker a jerk? When? And for Riker's leadership, you're also forgetting the episodes such as the Borg one where he commanded the Enterprise to destroy Captain Picard, something a less capable commander would not have been able to do. He also is able to come up with completely unorthadox strategies as shown in the episode where he engaged the Enterprise in mock combat, hacking into their viewscreen to create a diversion.

The biggest jerk was Q in TNG, he was pretty heartless in some episodes, though he got better.

McCoy is definitely my favorite TOS character, he does bring life into otherwise bland episodes. And as far as I can tell, Chekhov has little or no personality, which is pretty depressing.

Oh yeah, a tribute (not that he deserves one) for Wes.

Hilarity ensues guy. He is a jerk, but inside he has a spark of morality and he does do good things from time to time, especially when he took Picard back in time to show him that he should be happy with his life and not regret his earlier decisions. That was a quite touching episode, actually. I think it was called "Tapestry".
