Waluigi works ars a spinoff character like in the Mario Karts, Parties, and Sports games. But he doesn’t have the star power to have his own games like Wario.
I think its the nostalgia, the tactileness. That you opened the NES/ N64 box, read the instruction manual and etc.
But of course to keep its value you can never open it.
To me what is neat is that Mario games sold the most a piece. Not Zelda, not Sonic, not Halo, Diablo, and etc. It was Mario.

My headcanon is majorly SMB, SMB3, SMW, and Paper Mario 64. In fact, Paper Mario 64 is my major framework for my head canon, because it was the first Mario game with heavy dialogue, story, and continuity. The games before were more gameplay focused.

Pardon my candor, I loved NSMB DS, but feel the Wii games contributed to medicore vacuum of Mario games. My hope is that Nintendo keeps sequels to this series as Mobile and Gameboy only.
It is odd Luigi had few alts. I mean he has his own spin off games like Luigi’s Mansion, unlike Peach (she has a game), but Luigi has four games.
