I've actually pointed out how Mario doesn't really get the role of the side character while Luigi often has playable status when he's a star. Especially when I was complaining about New Super Luigi U where Luigi has been playable in practically every main Mario platformer recently barring Odyssey (though I have lamented the lack of Luigi in Odyssey until Balloon World and Luigi is only partially playable through Mystery Muhsroom though it didn't do Luigi justice though the Paper Jam one I like): Galaxy, Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Bros Wii, New Super Mario Bros 2, 3D Land, 3D World, Super Mario Maker 2. I thought it would be fair for Mario to get second fiddle playable roles but this risks Mario taking the spotlight, to be fair. Does this make Mario's role redundant since he's big? I don't know. But I just want playable Mario in side modes, why not have that option. Mario in Scarescraper yelling "Good jawb" while trapped in a rug and shouting "Over here!" prior to advancing the next floor would be neat.
