Well, I think it's because a lot of the so-called Russian memes we're familiar with are not made by Russians but by Americans who have a stereotypical portrayal of them.
Faux Cyrillic use for example hurts my eyes. And people tend to think Russia is still communist and is always the Soviet Union.
