I can't speak for everybody since I am not part of the group, but I imagine it is similar to how it was like for Sonic: a game came along with so much differences from the previous game that it ended up with people of differing opinions, with the vocal ones on the displeasure side. In Paper Mario's case, Sticker Star is the game that basically broke the peace mainly from the developers wanting to do something different. It did not help that there's an official interview (Iwata Asks) that did not help matters for those people since it practically showed that the developers are content with the direction they took.

There's a reason an indie game that followed the style of the older games (Bug Fables) was hailed as the saviour for fans of older Paper Mario games, and I imagine that the game's conceit meant that its appeal already made for an easy sell, since it filled a void that wasn't filled for years.

I don't know if Mario Party had a similar sort of contempt for games that go in a different direction, but judging by how readily opinions condemn certain games, even using choice words to highlight the point of dislike ("car"), I am inclined to say that it's similar (note that I don't share that opinion), but I guess Super Mario Party made those fans drop the contempt.

In this way, what I am getting is that too much change can really break some fan(atic)s.

Thank you for reading.
