As someone who's Dutch themselves, I can acknowledge that my native language is a bit difficult for foreigners to practice. When translating English sentences into Dutch, I sometimes find the sentence structure to be baloney as well, so you're definitely not alone on that part, haha.

the nitty-gritty of the language is indeed not all that different from english. i could get it over with in a few weeks, maybe. it's perhaps the fact that i'm trying to achieve proficiency from the get-go that makes me so annoyed, but i guess that would be the case with any foreign language.
