SMB3 has very different functionality of power-ups from SMW, there's the obvious Yoshi VS No Yoshi, but the cape is also a huge game changer, and I feel a bit underrated. IMO the cape is one of Mario's most versatile multi-function powers, probably only to be surpassed by FLUDD.
Meanwhile SMB3 has the hammer ability, frog ability, and the well known superleaf. which are all pretty fun as they change the flow of the levels in their own ways.
If you end up playing one of these, I recommend playing both.
