The longest gap there's been between 2 core mario games is 6 years
And we haven't a new 2d platformer on the switch yet

We also haven't gotten a new Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country, Pikmin, and who knows what else, I think they're mostly just coasting on Wii U ports for now. And honestly with how much backlash the NSMB series has gotten in recent years they're probably taking the time to rethink things before releasing more 2D platformers (at least I'd hope so).
