Joseph was only an ally with Stroheim (the Nazi guy) because he was practically forced to work with him so he could get help with fighting the Pillar Men, and along with that, Stroheim had valuable information about the Pillar Men, and the Germans had excellent technology that helped fight against the Pillar Men and their legion of vampires. As much as I hate to say this, if it wasn't for the Germans, Joseph would probably be dead.
