New this year: meeting summaries! For if you missed a meeting or want a quick reminder.

Meeting 1 – serene looking committee
- Logs

  • Welcome to the committee! As a reminder for veterans and info for new ones, a small overview was given for how the committee does things and how meetings operate, and especially how important it is to contribute on the hidden staff board if you can't attend. We also have four brand new members: Flygon64, Morgan, youngwii, and winstein.
  • Different people (can) have different roles. The main direction is more of a board of directors rather than a clear-cut director/subdirector division (even if it does look like that on paper) who each do what they're best at. At the same time, other committee members are also free to take on specific roles as seen fit. This can be for promotion, documentation, or otherwise.
A few members have already stepped up with ideas for tasks they can do, this will be fleshed out within the next few weeks.
  • We want to engage with the community more. Tournaments have been a staple for years, but as time moves on those can be big time investments, so we're looking at other ways to tickle people. Large-scale games and events are also quite heavy, so those may be better suited as non-Awards events (though this doesn't mean they can't run parallel).
Things like art, sidebar posts, 'Shroom articles, and non-tournament formatted games that take only one or a few days tops are good options to explore.
Note: one does not need to be in the committee to host a game or event, anyone who does just needs to give the staff a heads-up before posting threads of the sort.
  • Bonus stars will return. It will not be the same line-up as last year, as while some categories may have interesting different outcomes, others are definitely a done deal. Which new stars there will be is mostly a matter of seeing what comes up during meetings and on the staff board as what sticks out as interesting. The way they will be presented this year is also up in the air still.
  • We will retain the voting schedule of last year. This means that the Mario and Fail awards will each have a voting period of two weeks (at one vote per person per week), and the Community awards will be open for one week (with four votes per person).
  • Presentation making will give more time for backups. After the voting closes, there is a period of five weeks in which presenters can make presentations, and another two weeks for backup presenters to fill the spots. There will be closer communication to check in on progress, and as needed, extensions can be given by-case as long as you've shown to be on the right path to finishing it.
  • Hard presentation limits. Initially, one may sign up for three presentations at post, and sign up for two backups if those are completed. Alternatively, signing up as just a back-up will also be possible a few weeks into presentation making. This will put the hard limit at five presentations per person.
  • The total of 45 awards will remain the maximum. There are 20 Mario awards, 10 Fail awards, and 15 Community awards. We will cut and create new ones, but the overall total will not exceed 45. The awards also need not adhere to a multiple of five if things happen to go that way.
  • Share ideas with us! Meeting summaries, as well as other things, sometimes come up as ideas in offhand discussions instead of being directly suggested, making it easy to miss and implement. Do send ideas directly to us! Or post them in the general discussion thread.

Meeting 2 – oh yeah, Mario time!
- Logs

  • We got started on the Mario Awards! The committee goes over each award in order and determines whether to keep it, to delete it, or discuss it further at a later time. When kept, the nominees are discussed in-depth.
  • M1. Favourite Major Character/M2. Favourite Supporting Character: It was suggested to merge these awards, but it was ultimately decided to keep them both to promote the visibility of supporting characters. However, two characters from each award have been exchanged with the other.
For supporting, three new nominees from the recent game releases were added.
  • M3. Favourite Mario RPG Character: Relevant this year due to the releases of SMRPG and PM:TTYD on the Nintendo Switch. Last year's bottom three were replaced with a high-ranking write-in and two additional RPG characters.
  • M4. Favourite Mario Movie (2023) Portrayal: Not relevant anymore until a few years from now, so this award has been removed.
  • M5. Favourite Power-up: SMBW brings new power-ups, which were added in place of low-ranking results from last year, and the Statue Leaf was removed from its joint nomination with the Tanooki Suit and the latter was combined with the Super Leaf.
  • M6. Favourite Enemy: SMBW also brings new enemies, who were added in place of low-ranking results. A suggestion to instead replace this award with all-SMBW enemies was not chosen for.
  • M7. Favourite In-game Track: Given new relevancy with the new game releases. Two tracks from SMRPG and one from SMBW were added, and the three lowest ranking tracks from last year were removed to make place.
As the PM:TTYD remake is not yet out, this award may be revisited later to pick arrangements from that game.

Meeting 3 – a 'Shroomy meeting
- Logs

  • We (mostly) completed the Mario Awards! Favorite Mario Kart Course will require further review later, and Favorite Mario Party Board has been removed, but other than those two, all other awards have been kept, but with changes to some of the options.
  • M1. Favorite Major Character/M2. Favorite Supporting Character: These two awards were briefly discussed in the beginning, as a suggestion was raised about possibly rewording these awards. It was decided to keep the award names as they are.
  • M7. Favorite In-game Track: No further changes were made at this time; we agreed to revisit this after the PM:TTYD remake comes out.
  • M8. Favorite Soundtrack: Super Mario World and Super Mario World 2 have been replaced by Super Mario RPG (Nintendo Switch) and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. We also decided to review this again after the PM:TTYD remake comes out.
  • M9. Favorite Game Mechanic: Egg mechanics replaced by Badges (Super Mario Bros. Wonder), and two more options were added: Wonder Effects (Super Mario Bros. Wonder), and Princess Peach transformations (Princess Peach: Showtime!).
  • M10. Favorite 2D Platformer: Super Mario Bros. 2 replaced by Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
  • M11. Favorite 3D Platformer: There was some hesitation on keeping this, because it has been 7 years since a Mario series 3D platformer came out, but it was decided to keep this as is for now. Discussion was raised about the possibility of removing this if a new 3D Mario poll idea comes forward, however. Whether Princess Peach: Showtime! counts was also briefly discussed, but it was ultimately decided to omit it on the grounds that it stretches the definition of 3D platformer.
  • M12. Favorite Bowser Battle: Castle Bowser (SMBW), Bowser's Galaxy Generator (SMG2), and Bowser (SM3DL) have all been added, while keeping all previous options as is.
  • M13. Favorite Boss Battle: Shake King (WL:SI!) and Popple (M&L:SS) removed in favor of Bouldergeist (SMG) and Culex (SMRPG).
  • M14. Favorite Mario Kart Item: Coin Box and Boo removed in favor of Mega Mushroom and Boomerang Flower.
  • M15. Favorite Mario Kart Course: This award will be reviewed later.
  • M16. Favorite Mario Party Board: This award has been removed, because there has been no new Mario Party content in 3 years.
  • M17. Favorite Sports Genre: Kept as is, at least for this year. Will re-evaluate after this year's Awards.
  • M18. Favorite Retro Game (GBC/N64 and older): Wario Land II and Tetris Attack removed in favor of Donkey Kong 64 and Super Mario Land.
  • M19. Favorite Classic Game (GCN/GBA through Wii/DS): Kept as is for now.
  • M20. Favorite Modern Game (Wii U/3DS and newer): Removed Super Mario Party, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and Mario Kart 7 in favor of Super Mario RPG (Nintendo Switch), Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and Princess Peach: Showtime! May also revisit this after the TTYD remake comes out.

Meeting 4 – Battling a Weapon Bin
- Logs

Mario Awards review
  • M8. Favorite Soundtrack: Because it has been revealed that the original TTYD soundtrack will be available in the remake via a badge, it has been decided that TTYD will be listed as a single entry without console labels. Additionally, SMRPG will also be listed as a single entry, also without console labels.

Replacements for the two removed awards

We decided on Favorite Princess Peach: Showtime! transformation and Favorite Wonder Effect.
  • Favorite Princess Peach: Showtime! Transformation: There was some discussion over whether to make this favorite costume (and counting Peach's regular dress as a costume) or favorite transformation (which excludes Peach's regular dress). It was decided to make this award favorite transformation, and exclude Peach's regular dress.
  • Favorite Wonder Effect: There was discussion over how to label the options, whether the options should be labeled by a level name where the Wonder Effect is first introduced, or if we should use conjectural names that describe the Wonder Effects themselves, but it was decided that Wonder Effects will be labeled using conjectural names (which the Awards Committee will decide on) to reflect their effects.

The Favorite Mario Kart Course award will be discussed on a later meeting.

Fail Awards
  • We got started on the Fail Awards!
  • F1. Worst Power-up: Kept as is.
  • F2. Worst Enemy: We replaced Fangs with Cheep Chomps.
  • F3. Worst Obstacle: This award will be revisited later.
  • F4. Worst Level Concept: Although it was initially placed in the "discuss it later" pile, discussion later in the meeting resulted in this award being kept and to add Search Party levels (SMBW).
  • F5. Worst Game Mechanic: Vibes replaced by Talking Flowers.
  • F6. Worst Boss Battle: Catbat replaced by Purrjector Cat; Shadoo replaced by Bowser generator.
  • F7. Most Disappointing Update Cycle: Because none of the new releases since last year's awards have promised updates, this award will be revisited later.
  • F8. Worst Remake: This award was kept, but the contents will be further discussed in next week's meeting.
