Hotel Mario is one of those "so bad it's good" kinda games thanks to its corny dialogue and twisted animation and artstyle for its cutscenes. Gameplay wise, it's not one of the worst Mario games. Sure, the idea of running around and shutting doors to beat the level is mind numbing and redundant, but apart from that, it's reminiscent of Mario's arcade game adventures such as Donkey Kong and Mario Bros.. But given that Hotel Mario was released in 1994 on a next-generation console, I get that gamers didn't expect an arcade style platforming game from a Mario game not released on a Nintendo-made console.
