While New Super Mario Bros. U was a great game, I can definitely say the series overstayed its welcome by the time it released. We certainly don't need anymore of it.

that would make the 'omg nintendo made too many of these' claims (that really only arose because of their absolutely idiotic decision to launch new super mario bros 2 and then new super mario bros u within a few months of each other) something that was actually true by like game 2.

I disagree. I love the New Super Mario Bros games and think they're among the best platformers ever made. We should've gotten more of them.

I think most of the series' contentious reputation comes from New Super Mario Bros 2. They didn't give it many original mechanics and the coin-collecting theme while cool felt undercooked. The level design was great, but the levels themselves felt too easy at times and most of the songs were rehashes from New Super Mario Bros Wii. I'm not inherently opposed to the latter, but I wish they had added more original ones as well. The sad thing is that the game does have its moments of creativity and imagination, such as the Boohemoth levels and Worlds Mushroom and Flower, but they are rare showings in an otherwise run-of-the-mill game.

But by far the biggest missed opportunity is the complete lack of Wario. This is a game that's built on greed and collecting as many coins as you can, yet the most money-loving character isn't anywhere to be found. There's no doubt that if New Super Mario Bros 2 had included Wario as a playable character, the game would have a better reputation, and with it the series would be more well-received and we would have still gotten New Super Mario Bros games late into the decade.

I agree, I actually 100%ed the Deluxe version of that game and I think it's a lot of fun. But there isn't really much creativity in the post Wii titles in the NSMB franchise.
