Bread and Circuses

The world is a stage, and the stage is a world of entertainment"

Bread and Circuses" (or Bread and Games; from Latin: panem et circenses) In a Political Context, the phrase means to generate Public Approval, not by excellence in Public Service or Public Policy, but by Diversion, Distraction, or by satisfying the most immediate, or base requirements of a Populace, by offering a Palliative (distraction from Domestic Policy): for example Food (Bread), or Entertainment (Circuses). Juvenal, who coined the phrase, used it to decry the "selfishness" of Common People, and their neglect of Wider Concerns. The phrase implies a Population's erosion, or ignorance of Civic Duty as a Priority."

This all goes back to the Romans. When that empire was collapsing the powers that be there got together and decided to tax the people for an entertainment venue. The Colosseum was born. The pro teams today are no different. It's a distraction from reality. Bread and Circuses. At the end of every empire these things happen over and over again. Casinos are rigged through the nose as well. They claim 85%-99% return to players is standard but just like pro sports they can't leave it up to chance. They can change the payouts on the fly even as you play.

Why is any of this surprising??? In a society that worships that "win at any cost" mentality, cheating is just another tool to use for success. It's ingrained in every aspect of life and winning is your trophy.
