Welcome to the Official Mario Awards X Ceremony!

We are here tonight to celebrate Uniju’s birthday!!!

...and also I guesssssss the MarioWiki.

Don’t worry guys, I’m in for the long haul; I’ve bought plenty of snacks, most of which aren’t even visible because I took like 10 seconds to plan and shoot this photo:

You can be certain that, between the time that photo was taken at 2am today and now at what should be 6:40pm today if things are running on schedule, most, if not all of that has been consumed, and I’ve used the 10 minute breaks to pilfer the fridge of chocolate snack pies I’ve stored in there to chill. But enough of that...

It is the 11th Anniversary of the Mario Wiki, making this the 10th Mario Awards ceremony! WOW, double digits, that’s a lot of years! While I welcome our many community veterans who are returning for the festivities, and honor everyone else who has been keeping this wiki and community active and thriving this whole time, I admit that I’m not one to wade in nostalgia; I am really enjoying people in #mwchat as I’m typing this go on about how this is the first awards ceremony they’re attending and how excited they are to be here for it. I’m excited that you’re excited!! :bowser: It’s easy to be an old person here and think that it’s all been said and done, but to actually be in the community and see young peeps get hyped is invigorating.

I would like to thank our back-up presenters Edo and DragonFreak, who picked up many presentations and completed them all before the deadline all while looking fantastic, and a special thanks to Meta Knight who also did those things but without having formally signed up to do so! All of today’s events would not have been possible if not for them. THANKS !!!

I would also like to thank 2257 for providing his expertise to make tallying a lot less like hammering a nail into our skulls for a week straight, and instead just hammering a smaller nail for like only 2 days! You turned what was one of the most grueling tasks of being an awards hosts into something that was manageable without compromising sanity. Additionally, I’d like to thank this year’s Awards Committee, the rest of the presenters, tournament hosts, and anyone else who has volunteered their time, advice, efforts, words, literally anything that has gone into these events.

Before I take up all of your time, I will just continue letting the presentations and results speak for themselves. I hope you all enjoy our show and all of the hard work put into it!!

DragonFreak is up first with M1 - Best Sound Design!

"better than donald trump" was that really the best praise you could manage?

Everything that drowns me makes me wanna fly!
[size=18pt]Hello everyone! DragonFreak here to present to you M1. Best Sound Design. In my opinion, music is one of the most important features…in everything. Not just in video games, but in tvs shows, and cartoons, and movies too. In video games, great music playing along with great gameplay enhances the experience to the point where some people may not find a game particularly as fun if it wasn’t for fitting music. Don’t ever underestimate the power of music.

The Mario franchise has amazing music. NINTENDO makes amazing music in general. I wish I could talk about not only Mario, but the music of Zelda and Earthbound and Kirby and Fire Emblem and – well you get the point. Anyways, from the very first level of Super Mario Bros., to the China inspired music of Chai Kingdom, to the jazzy style of Super Mario 3D World, the music is top notch by any standards. Without any more delay, here is the top five best Mario games with the best sound design according to the Mario Wiki Community. As always, the full list with all the nominations and write-ins will be at the end.

[size=18pt]The Thousand Year Door. One may say this game is overrated, and to say I will say “good”, because this game deserves all its praise. Especially the soundtrack. It’s a little hard to explain the overall tone of The Thousand Year Door. I would like to say what I feel is the overall tone, which is Space. Considering two of the villains Lord Crump and Sir Grodus look like two aliens, it makes sense to me. I have a few songs to support this tone. First there is Luigi’s Theme which to me completely sounds like a frolic through space, possibly with limited or anti-gravity. Next is Rawk Hawk Battle, which has multiple “swoosh” sounds which sounds like a rocket blasting in the cosmos. I can see this song being played over a dogfight but with spacecraft. And lastly there is Shadow Queen Part 2, which I think this song speaks for itself when I say that the theme of this soundtrack is space. Every time I hear this I imagine a fleet of UFOs invading. Regardless of what the overall tone is, this sound design is amazing.

[size=18pt]The Super Mario 3d World. I’m not going to lie, overall I don’t like the New Super Mario Bros. series’ soundtrack, so when we found out that this game is going to have entirely new music, I was excited. And I was not disappointed. Riding on the wings of the Galaxies’ orchestral soundtrack, Super Mario 3D World takes a jazzier approach which is an instant win in my books. First let’s just appreciate the main theme of the game, the song played on the first level. This song makes me want to dance, and I don’t like dancing. It’s a style that Mario music hasn’t really stepped in, but it fits so incredibly well. Another gem is Fuzzy Time Mine Theme. The brass and percussion in this song is near perfection, which I have listened to this song for a few hours in a row in the past and will continue to listen to it. And lastly we have Champion’s Road, which if it isn’t apparent, it’s a remix of my favorite Super Mario Galaxy song Gusty Garden Galaxy in the style of the overall tone of Super Mario 3D World. You know how to make a dragon happy with your music Nintendo.

[size=18pt]Super Mario Galaxy 2. Galaxy 2’s soundtrack is similar to the original Galaxy but it is very much its own identity. Fleety Glide Galaxy fits the galaxy so well. The song feels like you’re flying (or gliding) through thrilling scenery, which is exactly what you are doing. Slimy Spring Galaxy is mysterious with a slight hint of uncertainty. A certain tune not really found in Galaxy 1. And then my favorite Galaxy 2 song Bowser’s Galaxy Reactor. Admittedly, the song starts off a little, slow, but it builds up into a wonderful piece of music.

[size=18pt]Mario Kart 8. As of now, it’s the latest Mario Kart game with no Dry Bones and Birdo (which I’m still salty about) and has the gimmick of anti-gravity and 200cc racing. So let’s drive into the music. First up is the sweet, sweet Sweet Sweet Canyon. Mmm so sweet. When I think of Mario Kart music in general, I think of songs like this, and it is absolutely great. Now for a song that can rival any Luigi’s Mansion song, Twisted Mansion. It is the unholy (but also holy) combination of pianos, string instruments, and spookiness. And to end the final lap of this number, the course that always manages to frustrate me but also manages to fill my ear in wonderful music, Mario Kart 8’s Rainbow Road. As always, the Rainbow Road's theme fits perfectly with cosmic and chaotic courses.

[size=18pt]Yeah who didn’t see this coming? Super Mario Galaxy’s soundtrack is simply amazing. Both Zelda’s Skyward Sword and Super Mario Galaxy have fully orchestrated soundtracks, which made me very musically happy at the time. It was so hard deciding what songs to showcase for this game. The sound design is just that good. Let’s start out with the first world: Good Egg Galaxy. When a game’s first real area starts with music this good, you know that the rest of it is going to be spectacular. If this doesn’t make you excited to play the rest of the game, I don’t know what will. Next us we have a softer song, the music of To The Gateway of Gateway Galaxy, the one with the very special and underwhelming rare Red Star power-up. All of these instruments harmonize together in a very soothing tone. And last but not least, we have what I already mentioned before to be my favorite Super Mario Galaxy song, Gusty Garden Galaxy. I am in love with this song. Everything from the brass, to the strings, to the woodwinds are composed so masterfully that I could listen to this for a week straight, which I’ve gotten pretty close to doing before. And with so many other fantastic orchestral pieces, it’s no wonder Super Mario Galaxy was voted as the Mario game with the Best Sound Design.

EDI: Mr. Moreau, we have a problem.

EDI: Mr. Moreau, can you hear me? Your input is required!

Joker: zzzZZZzzz

Joker: Huh??? What??? EDI?

EDI: Mr. Moreau, scanners have picked up an unknown object.

Joker: Well this looks like a situation.

EDI: I have calculated its trajectory and it is on a direct collision course. Evasive maneuvers are recommended.

Joker: Guess I better tell them to strap on the seatbelts, huh.

Joker: Commander, this is Joker. We got some unexpected company, so if the trip gets rough, don't blame me if things fly off the shelves.

Shepard: What is it, Joker? Is it a Collector ship?

Joker: No, it's... uh...

Joker: It appears to be a middle-aged man with weight problems... flying through space at mach speed.

Shepard: ...

Are you high?

Joker: Hey, listen Commander! When I want to daydream about asses, plumber's crack isn't usually the first thing that comes to mind, ok!?
