I'll update this topic with any relevant information, but please feel free to use this topic to ask any general questions you may have. If you are planning on hosting a tournament, please send either me, Edo, or 22 a PM with your idea(s).

Tonight's AC meeting will hopefully touch upon some tournament details we'll be...detailing...this year, such as expected token rates and scheduling.

Will megas be allowed in this year's Pokemon tournament? If the issue is with compatibility, maybe only allow Megas from XY and not the ORAS ones?

Depends on who's hosting. Cirdec offered but I also remember him wanting to implement a lot of smogon rules no one likes so perhaps this should be discussed by whoever wants to host/play

If you were gonna use any ruleset, why Smogon? VGC is at least the official Game Freak sponsored one. But those are double battles so eh.

Change the VGC rule set to singl battle, and the only restrictions are having multiple of the same item, and having any of the stronger legendaries like Mewtwo and Lugia. Stuff like Zapdos and Entei are fair game.

I also strongly suggest non-elimination like how SSB was done last year. No one likes being eliminated early because the other person decided to use a preset googled team.

I liked that system for Smash last year. Everyone got to play a lot of matches with different people and it was fun.

Getting four people available at the same time for doubles was a nightmare though.

whoever it was deleted their post but if they want to take over for the super mario maker awards contest then please go ahead because I think anyone else would do a much better job of it then i would

edit: same goes for the fire emblem fates contest because I'm sure someone who's had the game for months would be able to host it much easier

Do you have to be part of the AC to host one of these tournaments?
Nope, you just gotta know what you're doing and present us with a plan and stick to it

Hosting the last two Pokemon tournaments has made me realize that the Swiss-system is probably the best way to go from this point forward, especially considering how well it worked with the Smash tournament. Round Robin just doesn't work very well at all, I've learned.

I'd be interested in hosting the Pokemon tournament again if people would like me to, though! And I promise I won't disappear during it. >_>

Welp I would like to host Pokémon tournament as well this year.
If I do I am planning, to ban all legendaries and to allow all megas except overpowered ones like Mega Kangaskhan.

I recommend Swiss system for people doing 1v1 style tournaments. Much more games for everyone involved, much more even token distribution, but still rewards people for performing better than others.

Basically anything more than 2 players needs to be either pre-organized from sign-ups on or freestyled with who is on what team. I'm either making doubles sign ups strict on when people can play their matches or I'm just not doing it at all.

i am interested in doing the mk7 tournament again this year, it's not going to go terribly due to the people and i'm going to make sure of that. i'm going do the same system as last year, unless something else works better?

i'm also probably not going to be able to join the tournament itself but everyone can get back to me with results lol

Kangaskhan and Gengar are the only ones I can think of that are super busted. Maybe Lucario.

tbh i don't like the idea of megas in pokemon tournaments as they're overly gimmicky, i'd prefer we didn't but i'm not the host

you can just slap some game-winning item on him instead

Not all megas are gimmicky, some are just stat boosts, but I agree, some of the gimmicky ones aren't really fun to play against.

Salamence, Blaziken and Mawile, those are broken as well.

Honestly didnt mind the blanket Mega ban we had last year tbh, it made compatibility a non-issue and the event was still fun. For starters, the ones from ORAS cant be used to battle people from X and Y and even then you want to further restrict that list by banning up to six more of them. Why bother with that nonsense in the first place

Red Barchetta

Core 'Shroom Staff
^ That was my train of thought for wanting to ban them last year. I also didn't care for the boost it gave just a handful of Pokemon that could ultimately be the deciding factor in a battle. I'd much rather have a great, regular 6v6 battle with six legitimate Pokemon than including a Pokemon that has an unnecessary gimmicky edge to it, if that makes sense. I just don't find much reason to include Mega Evolutions - particularly a very small amount of them.

GalacticPetey

Donkey Kong
Eh. It just feels weird to ban something like Mega Audino but allow Pokemon like Garchomp and Salamence to run wild who are much stronger and more OP. Same goes for banning things like Phione who doesn't pose a serious threat to anyone.

Mega Audino
no but see the point i was trying to make is that because you can't use any of the Megas from ORAS to battle players who are using XY, you've already removed 16 of them (20 counting legendaries), and then you want to remove five more, leaving only 22 Megas to choose from, which is less than half of them. Because Megas are such a gimmick, it would then be ludicrous not to use one of those 22 Megas on your team and since you've arbitrarily decided which ones are too powerful and must be banned, most people will likely flock to whichever remaining Megas are the most viable anyway which is probably less than a quarter of those that are left. Then you have team-building around that mega and etc. All this will do is lead to more homogeneity, and we don't need that to become a bigger issue that what it already is with the amount of people copy-pasting smogon sets here.

Unless you really REALLY like a certain mega and it happens to fall under the 22/48 megas we could possibly use for this tournament, there is simply no point in including them since we've already trimmed down the list so much. it's not about power levels, it's about functionality and as it stands Megas simply wouldn't be functional in this tournament. This was already discussed at length last year and most people were cool with it.

as for garchomp and friends, this is all for fun anyway, so if you get your kicks out of using OP mons to destroy people who just wanna have fun with a team of their favourites instead then you're perfectly in your limits to do so but i get the feeling that most people probably won't like you very much afterward.

lastly, trying to defend the inclusion of phione is hilarious because seriously if it were unbanned would you even use it? the game does it and no one honestly cares lol

What Cirdec is proposing is no legendaries and a few megas and I'd personally advocate for no legendaries/no megas like last year instead for the reasons above.
