If you are dead, you are allowed to still post here (though not about game information, please see the rules below), but please do not flood the thread. Re: 'Shroom Mafia III - Game Thread / Rules + Gimmicks

Official Rules
Violation of any rules will make you exempt from receiving prizes.

1. If you see or feel someone is breaking any rules, please contact me about it. Do not use this as a means to get what you want from a player within the game, though. I, The Host, am not a tool for your agenda.

2. Please be patient. When a phase ends, I'm probably going to need at least a couple hours to get all of the results together and posted/sent out. Remember I'm only one host managing 42 players, with multiple powers, items, and gimmicks to account for. It takes a little time to make sure everything is accurate.

3. If you go 10 phases or more without doing anything, I will find a replacement for you. Stay active if you want to stay in the game.

4. Do not show another player your rolecard, and do not quote any PMs that I have sent you (paraphrasing is fine). If you are anti-Town, the same applies; you also can't share the identities of your teammates or the link to your QuickTopic.

5. Do not harass other players. If I see you singling somebody out for seemingly no good reason, I will take action.

6. Do not cheat or conspire to cheat. If I catch wind of any such thing happening, lemme just say, RIP you.

7. Once you have died, you may not reveal any further information to any other players. It doesn't matter what it is or how badly you want to say it, I won't allow it. If you have something valuable to say, say it before you're pronounced dead. You are allowed to still post in the game thread while you're dead, but please try not to flood the thread with deadposts (since you can't post game-relevant information anymore). I would prefer you speak your thoughts from The Beyond, but I'm not going to get on you one way or the other unless you're causing problems.

8. Once you have died, do not attempt to influence the vote of another player. I have no tolerance for that kind of interference.

9. Do not attempt to make Faux-Host posts. The only person announcing deaths, revivals, "something has happened", etc., is me. If I decide to use a specific font style or color to distinguish my posts from the rest, you should not use that font style or color yourself.

10. Most importantly, have fun! This game could be ferociously competitive, but it is just a game, so try not to take things too personally. Don't be a braggart, and don't be a spoil-sport. If you die or things are looking grim, there is always a way out, so don't ever give up!

Gimmicks and Functionality
1. Each phase will typically be 48 hours and end around 2pm EDT, though I may allow for extensions in 12- or 24-hour increments.

2. Each player has a "wallet" with Coins that can be collected or spent. You cannot trade, give, or loan your Coins to another player.

3. Each player is assigned a blood type. If a player is Bleeding, another player can donate blood to them to cure them, so long as they are a compatible blood type. I have listed more info about this gimmick below under the "Help! I'm Bleeding!" header.

4. Each player has a health meter that is measured in HP (health points). If your HP drops to 0, you will die. Various events may affect your health meter, including status effects, nightkills, vigkills, bombs, heals, and items.

5. Nightkills and vigkills cause 100 HP damage to one target. This means if you are not protected and have no defensive buffs, you will die from these actions.

6. Lynches bypass the health system completely. If you are lynched, you will die regardless of any health advantages you may have.

7. Each player has an inventory that can hold a certain amount of items. You can buy and sell items when the opportunity arises, and you can also trade items with another player. You can only trade items, though, and not things such as HP or Coins. Both parties must be in agreement over the trade for it to commence. You cannot give items from your inventory to another player, but you can use those items on another player.

8. The opportunity to participate in certain mini-games may arise throughout the game. If this happens, you have an unlimited amount of time and tries to complete that mini-game. Once you complete a mini-game successfully, you will typically receive a random reward out of a select pool of in-game prizes (items, Coins, buffs, hints, etc.)

9. In case you didn't realize, this is a complete role madness game. There are over 100 powers divided across 42 roles. I spent a total of 6 months balancing them though, so you can play comfortably knowing that every role has a weakness.

10. Each role is assigned a Power Level. The Power Level is meant to indicate how strong a role is in contrast with those that oppose it. Power Levels range from 1-5 and are, in most cases, set in stone. There are ways to temporarily reduce a role's Power Level, though.

11. Flavor text should never be taken as factual, except in the case of Illumination.

12. After the end of the game, I will assign ratings to players based on their performance within the game. The better you play and the more informed I am of your thoughts (i.e. you should send me logs of conversations and stuff), the higher your rating is likely to be. The players with the highest ratings after the end of the game will be rewarded with real-life prizes worth up to $50. You do not necessarily have to win to be assigned a high rating.

Coins
Coins are the basis of the game's economy, and are aimed to be a hopeful improvement on the location/unlockable-power gimmick.

Yellow Coins are the primary form of currency. In most cases, these are what players will be awarded and what they will be spending (on items, mostly). The worth of any other type of Coin is measured by how many Yellow Coins it is equivalent to.

Green Coins are a mysterious type of Coin that are dropped when certain events are triggered. How many of these coins are dropped for each player is dependent on the event being triggered and how it is triggered. Each Green Coin is worth 5 Yellow Coins. Collecting a certain number of Green Coins will unlock something important.

Red Coins are a special type of Coin that are dropped when an Innocent is killed. If one player is responsible for the death, 3 Red Coins are awarded; if two players are responsible, each gets 2 Red Coins; if more than two players are responsible, each gets 1 Red Coin. Having a locked vote on a player, or performing an action on a player that helps cause or leads to their death will constitute "responsibility". Each Red Coin is worth 10 Yellow Coins. 8 Red Coins can be used to upgrade a Mafia's role, or to summon a Salesman so you can purchase items.

Blue Coins are a special type of Coin that are dropped when a Mafia is killed. If one player is responsible for the death, 3 Blue Coins are awarded; if two players are responsible, each gets 2 Blue Coins; if more than two players are responsible, each gets 1 Blue Coin. Having a locked vote on a player, or performing an action on a player that helps cause or leads to their death will constitute "responsibility". Each Blue Coin is worth 20 Yellow Coins. 5 Blue Coins can be used to upgrade an Innocent's role, or to summon a Salesman so you can purchase items.

Purple Coins are a special type of Coin that are dropped when a Third-Party (Non-Innocent and Non-Mafia) is killed. If one player is responsible for the death, 3 Purple Coins are awarded; if two players are responsible, each gets 2 Purple Coins; if more than two players are responsible, each gets 1 Purple Coin. Having a locked vote on a player, or performing an action on a player that helps cause or leads to their death will constitute "responsibility". Each Purple Coin is worth 50 Yellow Coins. Purple Coins can unlock a variety of things when collected in different quantities, from role upgrades to mini-game summons.

  • At the end of each phase, I will send you a current tally of all your Coins.
  • Special Coins can still be spent just like Yellow Coins. However, they are counted separate so you can choose whether to spend them or to keep collecting them to unlock something.
  • Non-Yellow Coins cannot be stolen.
  • When Special Coins are used to unlock or summon something, those Special Coins are spent.
  • When I say "collect 8 Red Coins" or something along those lines, you must have all of those Coins on you at once -- it doesn't count if you just collect 8 Red Coins over the course of the game but only have 2 in your wallet.
  • Say you have 100 Yellow Coins, 3 Red Coins and 1 Blue Coin: That means you'd have 150 Coins to spend. Throw in a Purple Coin and you'd have 200.
  • At the start of the game, each player is given a set amount of Yellow Coins to start with. The number of Coins a player starts with is determined by the power of their role -- the more powerful a role is, the less money it will receive at the start.
  • Coins can be earned regularly throughout the game for things as simple as surviving the phase, meaning that roles of every caliber should be able to earn roughly the same amount of Coins throughout the game.
  • You can not give, trade, or loan your Coins to another player, although they can be stolen.
  • You will be allowed to sell items in exchange for Coins.
  • If you die and are brought back to life, you will start over with 0 Coins.

Status Effects
POSITIVE
  • Augmented. Target's vote will be counted two (or sometimes three) times. This stacks with Public Speaker powers.
  • Consecrated. Target is purged of and immune to any and all negative status effects. (This trumps Bleeding.)
  • Endorsed. Target will be able to use their powers without fail, no matter what. (This trumps everything, but do note that it doesn't make the target immune to disguises.)
  • Fortified. Target will take 50% less damage than usual. Nightkills will do 50 HP damage, Poison will do 10 HP damage, Burns and Bleeding will do 20 HP damage, etc.
  • Illuminated. If the target is killed by anything other than a lingering status effect, the name of the player responsible will be publicly revealed upon the target's death. (Be careful, Mafia!)
  • Motivated. Target will be able to perform their power twice. Some passive abilities may be doubled in strength as well.
  • Protected. Target is immune to any non-lynch kills placed on them, while their health is restored to max, and any negative status effects (except for Bleeding) will be removed.
  • Rejuvenated. Target's health will gradually increase by 20 HP per phase.

NEGATIVE
  • Bleeding. Target's health will gradually decrease by 40 HP per phase. Can only be stopped by Consecration or receiving a compatible blood donation.
  • Brainwashed. You will probably find out what this does eventually.
  • Burned. Target's health will gradually decrease by 40 HP per phase.
  • Diminished. Target's power output will be reduced randomly. Cops might only get partial checks, Doctors might only restore health, a nightkill might only do partial damage, etc.
  • Exiled. Target will be unable to perform any actions, use any items, donate blood, vote, or post in the thread.
  • Jarated. Target will take 50% more damage than usual. Nightkills will do 150 HP damage, Poison will do 30 HP damage, Burns and Bleeding will do 60 HP damage, etc.
  • Paralyzed. Target will be unable to use items.
  • Poisoned. Target's health will gradually decrease by 20 HP per phase.
  • Silenced. Target's vote will not be counted.

NEUTRAL
  • Sleeping. Target will be unable to perform any actions, use any items, or donate blood, but will passively regenerate health and temporarily negate any negative status ailments. Target will awaken automatically once they return to 100 HP. However, if they are visited by any player prior to then, the status effect will immediately end. When the target awakens, they will remember a dream that contains a clue about the game. Target can still post and vote during this time.

Help! I'm Bleeding!
Q: What do I do if I'm Bleeding?
- A: Honestly, the best thing you can do at this point is contact someone you trust that can donate blood to you. If you don't know of anyone who can donate to you, it's probably best to just ask for help in the game thread.
Q: How do I donate blood to someone?
- A: Just send me a PM saying "I want to donate blood to X" or something. It's pretty simple.

  • AB+ is a universal recipient, while O- is a universal donor.
  • Under most circumstances, players cannot receive blood donations unless they are Bleeding.
  • When a player donates blood, they must wait 6 phases before they can donate again.
  • Players who are Exiled or Sleeping cannot donate blood. Under any other circumstances, it should be possible.
  • When the Bleeding status effect is cured from a blood donation, that player will also recover 20 HP.
  • Alignment does not affect who a player can donate blood to or receive blood from.
  • Donating blood while Poisoned is possible, but you will transfer the Poisoned status effect to the recipient.
  • Blood type commonality is more or less based on real life. This means blood types like O+ and A+ are quite common, while most negative types are rare.

Role Types

Revealed Rolecards (Text Renditions)
Chibiki Daisy:
Alignment: Mafia
Character: Mario4Ever
Role: Politician/Statistician

Bio:
A resident of the U.S., you have been a staff member for The 'Shroom since 2013, serving as the Statistics Manger (at this moment, alongside Turboo). Any sections you've written have generally been special sections or staff collaborations. You were the 2014 Poll Chairperson.
Abilities: Each night, you may inflict one player with the Augmented or Silenced status effects. This will affect how that player's vote is counted for the next 2 phases. Also, you can only be lynched if there is an non-tied minority vote against you. A majority vote against you will result in a failed lynch. Last, each night, you may request a status report on one player. Status reports will detail their current HP, Coins, status effects, inventory, and blood type.
Unlockable: If you collect 8 Red Coins, you will unlock one new power and one upgrade. First, a 1-shot power that makes any votes against one player be doubled permanently. Second, your status reports will detect the power level of your target's role.

Power Level: 3
Blood Type: O-
Role Types: Voting, Passive, Informative, Surviving
Fantanoice:
Alignment: Innocent
Character: Superchao
Role: Cop/Ninja/Ghost

Bio: A resident of New York, you have physically manifested as several different creatures in wiki lore, including a purple Ninjakoopa and a blocky Boo. You are most well-known as the 2014 Director of The 'Shroom, but in 2013 and 2014, you also held the position of Interviewer.
Abilities: Each night, you can interview one player and discover their alignment, but not their role. Your results will also reveal which character ('Shroom writer) that player is. Be wary that certain powers can manipulate your results. Alternatively, you can choose to hide in the night, making players incapable of performing any actions on you (items included). However, you cannot hide from danger on the same night that you perform a cop check.
Unlockable: If you collect 5 Blue Coins, you will unlock one new power: your Ghost ability, meaning that after you die, you can continue to post in the game thread and cast a vote that counts. As a Ghost, you won't count as a living player, obviously.

Power Level: 4
Blood Type: A-
Role Types: Informative, Defensive, Surviving, Voting
Freakworld:
Alignment: Innocent
Character: YoshiKong
Role: Illuminator/Monitor

Bio: A now-retired Australian Yoshi/Kong-hybrid, you made quite a name for yourself in a short period of time. Your most significant contribution to The 'Shroom is undoubtedly the creation of 'Shroom Spotlight. You also co-wrote "Community Report" for Pipe Plaza in 2013.
Abilities: Each night, you may shine a spotlight on one player, Illuminating them for that night. If an Illuminated player is killed by anything other than a lingering status effect, their killer's name will be revealed in that night's flavor text. After each reveal, your spotlight will burn out and need a Shine Sprite to keep working. Each night, you may also request a report on one player, listing any actions performed on that player, but not who performed them.
Unlockable: If you collect 5 Blue Coins, you will unlock one of two power upgrades. You can either choose for your spotlight to never burn out, or to be able to distribute 1 Shine Sprite to one player every 3 nights. You can distribute to yourself.

Power Level: 5
Blood Type: A+
Role Types: Defensive, Informative, Modifying, Supportive
Paper Iggy Koopa
Alignment: Innocent
Character: Anton
Role: Hypnotist/Rainmaker

Bio:
Hailing from New York, you are a Magikoopa that also likes to take on the form of Politoed and Hypnotoad. You have been a writer for Fake News for over a year with your section, "Dear Anton", and more recently, your collaboration with Shoey, "Fightin' Footwear".
Abilities: Once per night, you may hypnotize one player, forcing them to use their night actions on one player of your choice. If the hypnotized target has a 1-shot power, it won't be used. Each night, you may also give one player 1 Pair of Shoes. This item will reduce the damage a player takes by 50% for 1 phase. Lastly, once in the game, you may use the move, Rain Dance, causing a rainstorm that lasts for 5 phases, nullifying any burns for that time.
Unlockable: If you collect 5 Blue Coins, you will unlock one new power. You will be able to use the move, Toxic, allowing you to inflict one player with the Poisoned status effect each night, reducing their health by 20 HP per phase for 4 phases.

Power Level: 2.5
Blood Type: A+
Role Types: Redirecting, Social, Limited Use, Gradual
Viper26:
Alignment: Innocent
Character: Pi
Role: Statistician/Accountant

Bio:
A resident of Sweden taking on the form of a Pidgey (and sometimes its evolutions), in 2013, you served as Statistics Manager for The 'Shroom. Outside of The 'Shroom, you are known for your love of math, mafia games, and Banjo-Kazooie. You are also currently a Chat Op.
Abilities: Each night, you may request a status report on one player. Status reports will detail that player's current HP, status effects, Coins, inventory, and blood type. If you come into contact with the Doctor or Surgeon, you will automatically share each of your reports with them. Additionally, during the day or night, you may double the amount of Yellow Coins one player receives at the end of that phase. This ability has a 2-phase cooldown.
Unlockable: If you collect 5 Blue Coins, you will unlock one new power and one upgrade. First, you will learn Roost, a 1-shot power that blocks you and restores 100 HP over 2 phases. Your upgrade will enable your status reports to detail a role's power level.

Power Level: 1.5
Blood Type: A+
Role Types: Informative, Profiting, Limited Use, Healing

(I ran out of space for rolecard text but I'll find another post to put them in.)

Re: 'Shroom Mafia III - Game Thread / Items + Credits

Items
There are a total of 7576 items in the game that I will be listing here gradually as players discover more. :luigi:
- Edit: There are actually 76 items. I missed one of Chivi-chivik's Cooking Guide recipes (X-Mas Shrooms) before starting the game, but decided to add it later on as an item upon discovering it.
- Edit 2: For balance, a Poltergust 3000 is now capable of permanently killing non-Phantomized players.
- Edit 3: (and probably the final edit) The death of the Wayoshi role revealed the final hidden item. That's all 76!

Q: Can I give items to other players?
- A: No. However, you can use items on other players. Almost any item allows that. Additionally, there are also some roles that have the power to distribute items to other players.
Q: Can I trade items with other players?
- A: Absolutely. Both parties must agree to the trade, and they can not exceed a transaction of 1:1 per player pair per phase.
Q: When will my item take effect?
- A: Unless otherwise specified, at the end of the phase along with most other actions.

Re: 'Shroom Mafia III - Day 1 / This Is Definitely Gonna Make the Papers...

Intro

A beautiful home, enormous in size and almost Châteauesque in design, is situated on an old dirt road in seemingly the middle of nowhere. The imagery was contrasting; the placement of this building just didn't make sense. Nothing weird had ever happened here before, though. There was no reason to think anything would go wrong.

This place is The 'Shroom's Event House. Every year or so, our beloved gazette holds a massive event for its readers and contributors. People come and go, with no worries. Fun is always had, and at the end of the day, the participants are always left wanting more. But...this place... it felt unsettling, for some reason...

I struggled to find a parking spot; the driveway was crowded with vehicles, the dirt road itself was narrow and pinned between two ditches. I wasn't left with much of a choice, so I just parked between the driveway and the road, blocking everyone from escaping. We were all here to have fun, so who would want to leave, anyway?

I realized the kind of fun we'd be having wouldn't be at all what I expected upon entering the Event House. Someone's body was lying face-down in a pool of blood. Someone near the body was heard saying, "He's dead, Jim."

What had we all walked into here? The body on the ground was very real and very dead. There was supposed to be a Mafia game here, but...did we just stumble upon an actual mafia problem?

"I think I saw a movie trailer about this once," said one guy off to the side that I didn't turn quickly enough to identify. "I bet the person responsible is among us. We should try to figure out who did it."

The room seemed to be in agreement for the most part. As uneasy as I felt about the situation, I felt obliged to go along with the idea.

I just hoped it wouldn't come back to haunt me.

It is now Day 1! You may now cast votes. The phase ends on .

Re: 'Shroom Mafia III - Day 1 / Why Aren't We Calling the Police?

(I'm ready.)

A young girl looked around the room, easily able to remember what this place is.

She looks at the corpse. "Who's is this?" she quickly asked.

(Someone can reply to me if they want. Might as well make this a good story.)

It seems like she's roleplaying with a spooky vibe added to it. I'm not sure what to think of it just yet.

I'm probably going to abstain unless something explodes.

I don't think you're going to find a lead out of her. IIRC she's been lynched before because of her inexperience, and that time she turned up innocent.

If you think you can turn up something from this though, by all means continue.
