A great video summarising thoughts on Mario's Italian origins and why it was decided to make him Italian.

BELIVING THAT MARIO IS AN ITALIAN IS THE FUNDAMENTAL THING TO BEING A FAN AS THAT IS THE FUNDAMENTAL CORE THING ABOUT THE CHARACTER. ANYONE WHO DENIES MARIO'S ITALIAN HERITAGE SHOULD BE SYSTEMATICALLY BLOCKED FROM EDITING AND PERMANATLY BANNED FROM THE FORUMS. EVEN IF A SYSOP WERE TO BELIEVE THIS ABSURD ERROR THAT MARIO IS "NOT ITALIAN", THAT WOULD NOT MAKE IT RIGHT. TO DENY THIS IS TO NOT BE A FAN. THERE IS NO WAY TO DENY THIS AND BE A FAN. NINTENDO HAS CONFIRMED THIS. CHARLES MARTINET HAS CONFIRMED THIS. YOUR ABOVE TESTAMENT PROVES THIS. MARIO IS ITALIAN!!! END OF STORY. EVEN IF MARIO WAS ORIGINALLY INTENDED NOT TO BE ITALIAN(WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS BECAUSE HIS NAME IS "MARIO" AND HE WAS NAMED AFTER MIYAMOTOS ITALIAN LANDLORD), THEN THAT WOULD NOT MEAN HE IS NOT ITALIAN NOW, BECUASE THAT IS THE WAY THE CHARACTER CLEARLY DEVELOPED. IF YOU DISAGREE, YOU ARE WRRRROOONGGG AND NOT A FAN, BUT AN ANTI-FAN.

Everyone knows that Mario and Luigi are Italian-Americans. There is evidence (Mostly in the cartoons) that Mario and Luigi have never have been in Italy. However, since they have Italian accents and enjoy Italian food a whole lot, I would propose that at least one of their parents are pure Italian, (Probably Jumpman. Just look at the guy), and they have been around said parent for a proportional amount of their youth.

Since our last debate, I have found definitive proof that Jumpman is an entirely separate character from Mario. But after looking over all the evidence, I still don't see what's so Italian about him:
Spoiler: all the evidence (click to show/hide)
