Let's say for the next Mario Tennis, Golf, or whatever, you can decide the entire roster. Catch is: only 20 characters. Under this limited number, who would be in your dream roster. Remember, you can include any DK, Wario, and Yoshi character, or non at all! Doesn't need to follow the partner set up.

I'm not sure about Dry Bowser since I personally find him hard to control in both MKWii and MK8D, but I was fine with Funky and pretty much don't care about Diddy.

Well rounded, and no duplicate clone characters. If I were to add more, then I would add the rest of the Koopalings and then the babies (all of them), because I want them to all appear together.

Pretty much everyone from the Mario Tennis 64, plus the transferable characters, so Alex, Nina, Harry, and Kate. Replace DKJr. with Diddy Kong and Shy Guy with Rosalina, too.

Oh yeah, what's with the fascination of leaving Baby Mario and Baby Luigi in but leaving out the baby princesses? Isn't that a little sexist? Mario Sports Superstars was guilty of this...and the inclusion of Metal Mario didn't help. Is it because they are more "canon"?
 
I'd say it's because not every character needs a baby counterpart in every game. Mario and Luigi are the main characters, the most commonly playable in platformers, and their baby forms have been around since Yoshi's Island. If anything Baby Bowser should have priority over the baby princesses, but he'd be redundant with Bowser Jr.
