Where's the part where the meteorite hit the dinosaurs sixty-five million years and created an interdimensional portal smh.

A while ago in chat, we determined that the events of Partners in Time actually cause the Mario timeline to split. There is an original timeline in which no time travel occurs, and an altered timeline which came about by Mario and Luigi travelling back to the past and intervening. It turns out that their intervention stabilized the situation in the past and averted great catastrophes. Everything went well.

In the original timeline however, Mario and Luigi's absence proved fatal. Their baby versions were not strong enough on their own to deal with the Shroob evasion. As a result, the situation on Yoshi's Island grew out of hand and the Yoshi population was decimated. Yoshis became very rare and kind of obscure, enough so that the Yoshi doll in Link's Awakening would not be made because nobody there knew what a Yoshi was. Without the doll, Link was unable to initiate the trade sequence that was instrumental in waking up the Windfish. In turn, that Link never woke up and perished at sea.

LA Link's demise sent a ripple through time and damaged Link's immortal spirit. When Link was reincarnated into the Hero of Time, his soul was wounded and incomplete. In this state, Link was no match against Ocarine of Time Ganondorf, resulting in the timeline in which Ganon kills Link.

So it turns out that, by travelling back in time and teaming up with their infant selves, Mario and Luigi prevented the existence of the Zelda timeline. They are true heroes. :mario: :luigi:

But Link's Awakening only happens in the downfall timeline. So even if we assume future events have an effect on the past, as OoT is set before LA, wouldn't this simply guarantee the events of LA occurring? Or does this result in a time loop and he is still destined to fail in this hypothetical LA?

But you forget that time in Zelda doesn't make any sense to begin with. In OoT Master Quest, to complete the Spirit Temple, you have to step on a switch in the future to open a door in the past. If events of the future can affect the past, this means that the future occurs before the past, and Link's Awakening takes place before Ocarina of Time, as well as after it. In truth: Time in Zelda flows forwards and backwards at the same time. If you view this from an absolute standpoint, an object that continuously moves back and forth does not change its position at all. Ergo, time does not exist and is completely meaningless. The Yoshi doll's absence affects events both before and after LA, because past and future are referring to the same thing: an unsteady point of reference in the face of incomprehensible chaos. In this progression where the doll does not exist, LA Link is always doomed to fail.

However, through the Mario Bros. intervention, the Yoshi doll is created, and Zelda's time is stabilized. LA Link lives, and as a result OoT Link lives as well. In this scenario, the Zelda timeline is never conceived and every Zelda game remains its own separate entity, apart from the few ones that are definite sequels to each other, such as OoT-->MM, OoT-->TWW, and ALttP-->ALBT.

1991- Mario beats up a young Soviet circus performer the night before the USSR dissolves. That young person would later be identified as Leon "Lemmy" Koopa.

Mario is a very important man. Even Issac Newton knows who he is.

trivia

Due to the fact that the Shroob invasion is not remembered by any characters, even Toadsworth, the invasion may not have actually been intended to happen in the past. Since E. Gadd's memory was actually rearranged by the events taking place in the past, the Shroobs may have actually been attacking the present, but been sent to the past by the time holes made by E. Gadd's time machine.

You forgot the part where Mario sends Bowser back in time to get stomped on.
