Jennifer's pretty skinny, yeah. She's also very outgoing, as, canonically, she takes care of Monsters that try to enter her town, so she exercises a lot. She's a pretty fit character, now that I think about it  :P

I'll mess around with her strands of hair, see what I can come up with. Thanks!

The proportions on your brother's Jennifer artwork are really off. Each boob is bigger than her head and gives the impression that she's only meant to be there for tits. Slim women do not have boobs like that despite what porn will tell you.

Proportions look more realistic in your upper-body image though she appears more adult than teenager (as does Stephen).

There are art resources that can guide you. If the Internet is too spooky for you to search 'art resource female body' then go to the library and get a book on it.

Finally, if you want to add more detail to your shading you should learn about 'dithering'. It's an old-school digital art trick to get around only having tiny amounts of colours to work with. Plenty of tutorials available for it.

My brother's art is all him, so I can't speak for him. Just like me, he is learning his way as he progresses. I realize she looks a little bit larger compared to my version, but hey, she looks good. My brother has said he'd like to redo her and Stephan at some point, so I'll offer some more guidance when that happens.

Heh, they look too old? That's a first. Usually I'm told they look too young! Just can't quite find the middle ground :P While proportions are something I definitely have trouble with, I can tell I'm getting better at them. The next character (Hamilton) should look older than these two if I do it right...

I actually DO have a book on male and female proportions. I'm just stupid and completely forget about it sometimes, thanks for reminding me!

Ah, yes, I know about dithering. I've been experimenting with it for the town tilesets. I normally use it once I see the image as finalized, though it doesn't look right on character portraits due to their large size compared to the tilesets. I'll run some more test, though.

Finished up Hamilton last night, but ran out of time to post. :P Hamilton would be considered the "tank" character of Power Master; he has a high attack and is the only character capable of wielding two weapons. He is quite tall compared to Stephan and Jennifer I posted earlier. The spikes look a little impractical, but they allow him to do a counter attack when he's wearing them in game.

Hopefully, he looks 18 here to you guys.

Finally, if you want to add more detail to your shading you should learn about 'dithering'. It's an old-school digital art trick to get around only having tiny amounts of colours to work with. Plenty of tutorials available for it.

Yo, I tired this with my characters, but it just wasn't turning out right. Depending on the intensity of the dithering, it either didn't make a difference or made the characters look like they were colorful marble statues. I'll keep experimenting, but I don't think the characters need it that badly.

Double whammy!

Here's Helen. Canoncially, she appears in the desert, so she dresses lightly so as to not get overheated. (And everyone had shoulder pads when I designed them, cause 12-year-old me went "Shoulder pads are cool!" :P ) She's 18 and is slightly shorter than Hamilton. I have no idea how to shade round objects...

Hamilton's upper arms need to be thicker, and I'd also recommend making his chest wider to give that tank feel. The shoulder pads look great, though, and I like the detail in his hair.

For Helen, her shading on her chest makes her look like she's wearing an undershirt, which I'm not sure is intentional or not. For her breasts, give them less shading, as they look incredibly saggy with that amount of shading, which may be the feel you're going for, but she's eighteen so I don't think that's intentional. In addition to that, smoothing out her face will also make her look younger. But again, I very much like the shoulder pads.

Hm, I can increase the size of Hamilton's arms easily, but his chest may be more difficult with the chestplate in the way.

Helen wears some loose clothing, which I guess didn't come out right. It's supposed to be a short dress she's wearing. Helen has also always been slightly rounded compared to the others, so her face is thicker, her hips are wider, etc., which I probably should've mentioned. :P

I'll see what I can do with them and how they turn out.

How do these look? Hamilton's arms are thicker, Helen's face is slightly thinner, and her breasts are shaded differently (though I have no idea what I'm doing with those).

Also increased the image size width, as I have them placed differently in the game than I did before (more on that later), but I'm still working on that.

How about another area map! Fora Forest has been changed quite a lot since the original game. The Forest is more condensed, ledges have been added, the layout is slightly different, and players can see beyond the Forest into Moneo and the town of Fora. A path is also present, leading from the town to the temple. Fora Temple also appears to be slightly redesigned, having two pillars on top instead of six, holes in the walls, and a broken window.

I have yet to design any enemies, so the Forest is currently uninhabited, though there are a few treasures not shown here. Can you get a feel for how big the world will be from this image?

So, I'm a bit conflicted here. The side-view battlers are difficult to implement, but they open up a wider array of animations. Thing is, I'm a terrible artist, at least in that sense. I can tell I'm getting better with the tilesets and portraits, but the full body sprites are hard to draw.

Here's some comparisons: the original Power Master 1 used front-view battlers (upgraded to show a character graphic). The enemy will be positioned directly in front of you, but you don't show up. Instead, a face graphic will appear (which I will reposition), but animations will not play out on your characters.

For side-view, the enemy will be placed off to the side and the characters will be positioned off to the right. Animations will play out on both sides. I think my character graphics need some work, and I feel like I'd get a lot of criticism from players because of it. They are hard to work with and I'm not an animator...

What do you guys think? Added a poll, but feel free to express yourself here as well.

*Backgrounds and enemy are provided by the RPG Maker MV engine. They won't be in the final game.

If you wish to maintain the side view but want an easier time animating, I would recommend making the sprites larger. While it may make the initial sprite harder to make, it makes animating the characters easier overall as you have more to work with.

If you want to scrap the side view but still maintain animations, you could look to Mother 3 for inspiration:

You could have the character headshot sprites pop up whenever they attack, and perhaps have a short three-frame animation for different kinds of attack.

Perhaps I may have worded it wrong. The player's attack animations will play out, but the enemy's will not. For example, if the player uses a lightning attack, a lightning bolt will strike the enemy. But if the enemy uses the same attack, the screen will simply shake and the player character's health is reduced. I am totally fine with this, but I know some players may find it a little lackluster.

Cut the fat and only have the front-view animations. It's good enough for Undertale

Friendly reminder that I would like some more votes on the battlers.

In the mean time, here's some more characters I've been working on:

From left to right, it's Alice, Matt, Fora, and Pam. All will be NPCs in the upcoming demo, though Alice and Matt will be fully playable in the full game. I think they look pretty good, even Matt who looks incredibly (but intentionally) weird.

Alice will take on the role of the sister of the Digger from Uora, which will change depending on the player's choices at the start of the game.
Matt is who I call a "Failing Flirter". A philanderer who shows off his muscles to impress women, but will always be serious when needed.
Fora is the Guardian of, um, Fora and is the player's grandfather. He wears green, but the other Guardians will have a different color scheme.
Pam is the shopkeeper and will man the shop in every town except Mora, where she trades places with the innkeeper, Violet.

Fora looks great, Matt looks wrong but I can't put my finger on why. I think he needs more shadow on his forehead. And some shadow around the bottom of the forehead where it meets the nose and is aligned with the eyebrows to give it more shape. A tiny shadow around the sideburns as well.

Ah, I see what you mean. His mullet doesn't have an appropriate shadow underneath. Added the shadows. This look better?

Also, reduced the size of Pam's breasts because they seemed way too large and disproportionate to me.

I updated the Power Master Wiki with a revised look I like. The grass background seems a little harsh, contrast-wise, but I currently don't have anything good to swap it with. Anyway, give it a looksee and what do you think?

http://power-master.wikia.com/wiki/Power_Master_Wikia

As for the topic of battlers, I'm thinking I'll keep it to front-view battlers. But I don't need to start adjusting the mechanics of battle yet, so I'll keep the poll up a little longer. (At the moment, combined with a few other polls I have elsewhere, it's 50-50.)

Alright, so I've decided to stick with front-view battles, meaning the player does not get a battler sprite. This appears to be the majority vote anyway, and it'll make the battle aspects easier on myself.

I've been working rather slowly lately, which is not a good thing because I want to get this done. Just a few more portraits, a tileset, and three enemies and the game will be ready for a demo release. At this pace, I'm not sure if I'll have the game ready by the end of 2017...

Question: How do I remove the poll...?

As far as I know, only mods can do that. You can ask one to remove it if you want or just leave it
