Welcome to Fail Awards VIII!

Starting in 2009 with only 10 awards, and growing to 15, this ceremony showcases the worst of the Mario series. Now, at the risk of sounding cheesy, that doesn't mean the presentations aren't still good! There is something else I would like to address in this opening speech, though.

As you have likely already heard, Walkazo passed away earlier this year, on March 27th. If this is your first awards ceremony, though, you might not have known about her fantastic contributions to the awards over the years; for the Fail Awards in particular, she wrote 2015's F1: Worst Character, a charming comic reminiscent of her 'Shroom publication The Adventures of Little Mario. She also wrote U10 two years in a row, in 2014 and 2015, taking two drastically different approaches; both are very enjoyable and unique. She also wrote 2015's Favorite Koopaling, a self-described "rap poetry slam jam", and one of the best presentations of that year.

No matter what your best memory of her is, whether it was her wiki contributions, her presentations, her work on wiki fiction, or just conversing with her over the years, there is no denying she was a huge part of this site, and her passing has left a void here. I definitely didn't know her as well as some others, since most of our discussions were about administrative issues, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't still think about her a lot...

To honor her, I recommend donating to the Tommy Thompson Park Bird Research Station, where she spent much of her time. To say she was devoted to bird-banding is an understatement, and she detailed her banding trips around the world in some of her forum posts.

With all that said... I hope you enjoy the show! There are some excellent presentations this year, and I would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work! I think it'll show in the upcoming ceremony, too; enjoy!

F1 - Worst Character
by Mr. Edo

It was the best of characters. It was the worst of characters.

For starters, we shall focus on the worst of characters.
The three worst characters of the year 2016 in fact.

Story time!

Our story begins a very, very long time ago with a young girl. One day, this girl spotted a rusted spaceship holding a small star child.

"What's your name? Are you lost?" the girl asked the star child. "I'm Luma, and I'm waiting for Mama. She's coming for me on a comet!" said the star child, who had been waiting day and night.

"Don't worry. I'll wait with you," the little girl promised Luma, "But first I'll have to be a baby and participate in a bunch of kart races for no reason!"

"Uhm... what?"

"Goo goo, gaa gaa, vrooom!" said the now infantile Rosalina, drooling out of the corner of her mouth. Then she drove her kart into the setting sun, the fragile illusion of continuity shattering behind her. The shards pierced the hull of the battered old spaceship and the whole thing blew up in a razing ball of death and fire.

The fire was so vivid, it spread out of the story book and burned down the library. It consumed everything, and everyone who had gathered to hear Rosalina's story burned to ashes, leaving behind only their charred bones.

With everyone who knew about it gone, the memory of Rosalina's story book faded, until it was all but forgotten. Forgotten and replaced by a baby driving a kart. Out in the distant sky, somebody laughed.

We won't know which place Baby Rosalina took in the kart race, but we know she won third place in the Worst Character awards poll.

Mario is a great man. Hailed and celebrated as the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom, and champion to the fair Princess Peach, nobody can deny the monumental accomplishments of this legend of a plumber.

But let's be honest: There's also not much going on in that odd potato he calls a head. His vocabulary is limited to a bunch of yahoos and catchphrases, and one could argue he only jumps so well because he's got a lot of hot air up in his noggin.

In fact, he, and by extension we, the players, are often far too stupid to figure out what to do. But luckily, Nintendo has pity on us poor intellectually challenged hairbrains and so Mario is often accompanied by a "helpful" character who tells him exactly what to do.

In this particular case, the character is a living sticker. Yes, a piece of paper with glue on the back is smarter than Mario and all of us. She is also shaped like a crown, which makes her a royal pain in your ass.

Give it up for Kersti, who won second place.

Ok, so, for this next part I had this huge original bit planned where I draw an elaborate comic about the worst character of 2016. It was going to be phenomenal, involving dozens of characters and a storyline both comedic and poignant. This was without a doubt going to be the high point of the awards ceremony.

...

But then I thought: "Naaah, that's too hard. I'd have to like, put effort into things and stuff", and to be frank: Ain't nobody got time for that.

So I like, dug around in the archives and took some image file from my 2014 presentation, and then I just put a pink filter over it. It's all the same anyway.

So here it is, my totes original presentation:

And there you have it: A lazy presentation for a lazy character.

In an absolute landslide, with 1034 votes, a greater amount of votes than 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th places combined, the worst character of 2016 is...

Pink Gold Peach

GBAToad is up next with F14 - Worst Setting!
