2012 Anniversary Logo by Edofenrir

We are gathered here on this forum to celebrate the Super Mario Wiki Anniversary. It is truly difficult to fathom it all. Almost seven years ago, on August 12th, 2005 at 13:47 EDT... at that one instant, there was one registered user who made zero edits, zero articles that served the purpose of covering the Mario series, no community, and almost nothing except for a new website. Nearly seven years later, however, there are over 24,000 accounts registered that have made a combined total of over 1,000,000 edits; over 12,000 articles that are dedicated to covering the Mario series; and we now have a bustling community involved in the wiki, the forum, the chat room, The 'Shroom, the Poll Committee, and the Anniversary festivities. The website has consistently grown and will continue to grow and fulfill its ultimate goal- to give information on every aspect of the Super Mario series.

We are also gathered here on this forum to celebrate Userpedia Awards V. The User Wiki was created on June 12th, 2007 at 12:16 EDT. The wiki was founded as a way for those dissatisfied with the Super Mario Wiki's strict policy against user-fanon (which was deemed as "unproductive" to the overall goal of the Super Mario Wiki) to have somewhere to post up their Super Mario Wiki-related fiction. After several days, the wiki moved to Mwuserpedia. The services on EditThis (on which both the User Wiki and Mwuserpedia were hosted on) proved to be inadequate for the growing website's needs, and so later that year, Userpedia moved to the Scribblewiki wiki host. Activity rose so much after the move that it would rival, and at many times surpass, that of the Super Mario Wiki. Userpedia became so essential to the members of the Super Mario Wiki, that a second Ceremony was added to the Super Mario Wiki Awards in 2008: the Userpedia Awards. Several months after this landmark achievement, however, Scribblewiki crashed, and Userpedia moved from host to host until it came to its permanent home at Adriels. Ever since, the dedicated members on the website have fought against all odds to see the day when Userpedia will come back in full force, above and beyond the Scribblewiki days. Userpedia has not seen its sunset years... Userpedia has only seen the beginning of a better era.

It is extremely fitting that the heart and soul of the community would start the celebrations on this day. The Super Mario Wiki Anniversary festivities would be nothing without the community, and so giving the honor of being the Opening Ceremony to Userpedia Awards V is appropriate. It is also significant that the Userpedia Awards Ceremony has finally been restored, after several years of insistence by the supporters of Userpedia, to its rightful and complete size of ten awards dedicated to acknowledging the efforts and work of those who make both websites possible. The victory that was achieved in returning the Userpedia Awards Ceremony to its proper amount is a turning point in the history of the Super Mario Wiki Awards celebrations and Userpedia, and is a huge victory for the community itself. It shows that the band of persistent people that fight to have Userpedia recognized once again as the center of the community can prevail against any and all forces working against this movement. The struggle to restore the Userpedia Awards Ceremony parallels the struggle that the members of Userpedia itself have faced in trying to restore the website to its golden days. The battle may be tough and it may take time, but in the end, the effort will pay off.

There are many individuals to thank for making this year's Awards celebrations and Userpedia Awards V possible. The Awards Committee extensively discussed and debated ideas for this year's Ceremonies, and even considered suggestions that both the Userpedia Staff and The 'Shroom Core Staff made for their respective parts of the show. Turboo has done an exceptional job in leading the Awards Committee and for allowing a proper talk to take place regarding our community's place in the Anniversary festivities. There are those who helped by going to the voting booth and casting their votes in the polls that were open for a month. The presenters and the back-up presenters deserve the utmost respect and appreciation tonight, for they are the individuals that sacrificed much time to ensure that the results of each Award are presented in a creative and fun manner and that the Awards Night is an excitable night. And all of the attendees make this show worthwhile tonight, whether they attend in chat, the forum, or both; and whether they stay for the entire night, or if they come and go at times. Thank you all, for this will be an Anniversary to remember.

And of course, do not forget to thank Porplemontage for founding the Super Mario Wiki seven years ago and having managed much of the technical and maintenance work that has allowed it to stick around for this long. For had he been doing something else for all this time, the following words might have meant nothing:

Welcome to the Super Mario Wiki Anniversary Festivities!

Welcome to Userpedia Awards V!
