  • I've spent over 1k hours and around $200 on tf2 and in retrospect it's really sad and I feel bad for spending so much money on virtual hats

Nah, I played myself, they didn't play me. I'm the one who chose to spend money on a free game, right?

It's perfectly fine to accept responsibility, but the "player choice"mindset by others shaming those that have spending problems doesn't help you, lets you down without addressing the other side of the coin. You have that responsibility and mindset to change your habits, sure, but it may help persuade you to change if you're aware that those that push microtransactions on you have spent lots of time and money thoroughly researching the psychology of players and then tapping into psychological vulnerabilities to try to exploit that percentage of people to get them to part with their money. They make it free to play to entice you into playing but they also try making the experience grindy and unrewarding while the cosmetic awards look appealing enough. The small payments you make are small for a very deliberate reason; they add up quickly but if you don't keep a hawk's eye on the money, you won't notice until you add up manually. But in the end, it makes the company a LOT of money.

It's all deliberate, part of a scheme, and those that push microtransactions and lootboxes want you to think it's your fault when in fact they're the ones with the power and responsibility to set limits and don't want you to become aware of how they're exploiting you.
