Video Games / Totalbiscuit, game critic, dies from cancer at 33
« on: May 24, 2018, 10:27:45 PM »

I really liked his videos talking about...uh video game stuff, even though I'm a casual viewer. I've known he had cancer for quite some time and knew he wasn't going to live much longer, but I'm still really upset to see him die at a really young age.

Is anyone else a fan of him? I'm planning on watching maybe more of his videos later on.

Rest in Peace, John Bain, July 8 1984 - May 24, 2018.

The Marioverse / Newer Super Mario Bros. DS
« on: January 01, 2018, 05:33:46 PM »
Anyone of you remember the hack, Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii? If not, find the opportunity to go play it, that hack is really good.

Well, a sequel of that has been released recently, Newer Super Mario Bros. DS

It's a mod similar in style to Newer Super Mario Bros., except with a few new things and it's in New Super Mario Bros. DS style format.

Here are the features (courtesy of Skawo's OP in that forum)

All new levels, made in style of NSMBW (i.e longer and more expansive than those of NSMBDS),
New or downported from Newer tilesets,
An entirely new soundtrack, featuring various songs, including those from Newer Wii,
New world themes, focusing most on the mini worlds from Newer Wii,
    Remodelled and retextured World Maps,
Texture and model hacks on enemies and objects,
    New mechanics, enemies, menus, etc...

this hack was the main reason none of you have word from newer u since i posted it here some time ago btw

Wiki Collaborations / Tightening Featured Articles guidelines
« on: May 22, 2017, 09:05:42 PM »
So recently, I nominated Culex to be unfeatured because I think that its length is too short for it to remain in its featured stats. I had a disagreement with Tucayo regarding what constitutes as a reasonable length, and he suggested me to rewrite some of the guidelines of the Featured Articles so it better defines and accommodates what exactly that we are looking in Featured Articles. I have some difficulty coming up with ways to improve the system, however, especially in terms of how large articles should be or what the cut-off point is; it's difficult coming up with a guideline that is not too stringent, but isn't too overly vague as well, as the current definition attempts to add a broad sense of article length rather than strictly, and so we end up with debateable articles such as Culex.

I think I have an idea of how to rewrite guidelines outlined in MarioWiki: Featured Articles. I've been wanting to take inspiration from MarioWiki:Good Writing on how to elaborate what our rules exactly mean, with more detailed explanations on what is suitable as a  featured article and not.

This is my WIP progress page

User:Baby Luigi/Featured Articles guidelines

I would like feedback or maybe someone who has better writing skills than me to draft out what I want.

Posting it here if anyone is interested in uploading the .pngs to MarioWiki. Gonna be fun uploading all of them Mario badges, as well as Ashley ones and stuff.

Badges from later versions are not included.

The Marioverse / Newer Super Mario Bros. U (NSMBU hack)
« on: July 10, 2016, 06:49:27 PM »

Spoiler: Screenshots (click to show/hide)

And yes, I'm a member (as well as my twin, LeftyGreenMario) of the team, for quite some time before its official announcement (like months) as one of the 3D modelers so I've known about this for a while. The stage of this hack is still in very early beta, so there's not much I can say about our progress right now.

The level editor being used for this is called "Satoru", it's a branch of Reggie NSMBU.

You can ask questions I guess, but don't be surprised if I can't answer any of them (especially WHEN WILL THIS HACK BE RELEASED!!!) :P

I'll post official updates here when they come around.

Super Smash Bros. / Your worst stages from each respective Smash?
« on: May 31, 2016, 10:03:59 PM »
Super Smash Bros.
None of them are particularly awful in my opinion, but Sector Z is far too huge and Dreamland is a bit on the boring side.

Super Smash Bros. Melee
I don't particularly hate any of these either when playing with my settings, though in other cases, Jungle Japes, Big Blue, and Green Greens might get my vote here.

Jungle Japes has annoying, hard to see pits, too many small platforms with small gaps, with the fast flowing water and overpowered klaptraps.

Green Greens's bomb blocks are stupid.

Big Blue is incredibly difficult to fight on, with all standable platforms that are constantly moving.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Mario Bros.,  I hate nearly everything about this stage. I hate the fixed camera. I hate the over abundance of collisions. I hate the walk-offs. I hate the enemies. The only thing I probably don't hate is the music choices, they're pretty decent as far as I'm concerned.

Spear Pillar is horrendous in its stage design, with the egregious cave of life on the bottom that may as well not be there and overpowered and disruptive legendary Pokemon.

Green Hill Zone has a too high blastzone, annoying destructible floors, and that stupid checkpoint that has too high knockback.

New Pork City is a stupidly huge stage with a horrendous design where your characters are microscopic and there's gigantic empty space.

75m is pretty gross, too stupidly huge with overpowered stage hazards and a nonsoft floor that makes it irritating to navigate.

Rumble Falls has overpowered spikes. I don't really mind autoscrollers though.

Mushroomy Kingdom's stage layout doesn't bother me as much, it's mostly how they chose to portray Mario. They did it in one of the worst ways Nintendo could do it: instead of making 1-1 look like, you know, 1-1, it has to be post-apocalyptic, gritty, dead, and edgy. I have stated before that wildlife doesn't deteriorate on its own over time, it actually becomes more wild, lush, and less desolate, so unless a nuclear bomb was dropped on here or global warming drastically occurred, it doesn't even make sense from a "realism" viewpoint either. Also, with Nintendo being Nintendo recently, 1-1 is one of the most regurgitated level designs ever, so there's literally no possible way it could be "abandoned".

I don't like hating on Brawl's stages, as there are some stages I really like in Brawl, but oh man does the weakest Smash Bros. entry imo have some of the worst stages in Smash Bros. series.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS
Paper Mario is blah. The fan in the first segment is annoying while the third segment is mostly giant void with empty space, difficult to fight seriously. It's amusing to see CPUs commit suicide here but otherwise, this stage is meh. How it's based off the worst Paper Mario is the least of my worries: if the stage is Sticker Star-based and fun to fight in, I'll like it. This is not the case here.

Dream Land has puke green graphics all the way through. I know it's supposed to be representing Kirby's retro time periods, but since when Kirby was ever a retro game series? I don't think this stage does the Kirby series any justice at all. It's still not a good stage, even disregarding its ugly visuals.

Living Room, the stage is far too big and the falling blocks fall unexpectedly fast and it doesn't help that their knockback is high. It's lame, boring, and annoying when it could be.

Tortimer's Island's stratospheric upper blast line is what killed the stage for me.

Gaur Plain's stage layout is unwieldly, awkward, and just not fun to fight in.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Palutena's Temple is too huge, even for 8 player Smash. You can barely see your fighter and it's incredibly difficult to score KOs on this stage due to its size. The developers thing 8 players is an excuse to make a stage as huge as they can when it makes a stage an unfocused mess. If you want an 8 player Smash stage done right, look at Big Battlefield, Norfair, Mario Galaxy, Luigi's Mansion, where they're not too big, but not too cramped either (though I do personally enjoy cramped stages myself).

Gaur Plain is even worse in the Wii U version, where its larger size exemplify its problems even in 8 player Smash.

Pac-Land is the worst stage in this game. It has eye-searing visuals stemming from awful contrast, abnormal pits so you'll fall off in the weirdest of places, no grabable ledges to speak of, annoying fire hydrants and logs, tiny blast lines, and horrendous music to do to your ears what this stage does to your eyes. Yeah, I know, it's supposed to be "retro", but these graphics aren't "retro", they're outdated and they look like they've been drawn in MS Paint by first time users of it. Retro stages would be Balloon Fight, Mario Bros., 75m, they still look nice and the contrast is decent. Here, they used the clown color palette so the overly bright colors burns away your cones.

Miiverse is a stupid stage, mostly thanks to, you know, Miiverse.

Otherwise, I think this game has my favorite stages, especially Pilotwings and Mario Kart 8's Mario Circuit.

So out of these, here's how I'll rank them, from the worst being 1. with the least worst being lower:
  • Mario Bros.
  • Pac-Land
  • Spear Pillar (it gets points over Pac-Land for having decent music and nice visuals)
  • New Pork City (its stage hazard isn't as bad as Spear Pillar's and it's less infuriating)
  • Palutena's Temple
  • Miiverse
  • Rumble Falls
  • Green Hill Zone
  • 75m (it's not higher because the Wii U version of it is far more playable than the Wii version, thanks to its dropthrough platform and 8 player smash)
  • Gaur Plain
  • Living Room
  • Dream Land (3DS)
  • Tortimer's Island
  • Mushroomy Kingdom (it's low on the list because at least it's pretty fun to play in despite its miserable aesthetics, and the music is great)
  • Paper Mario
  • Jungle Japes
  • Green Greens
  • Big Blue
  • Sector Z
  • Dreamland (N64)

So what are my unpopular opinions? I'll list stages that a lot of other people hate but I don't hate.

Super Smash Bros.
Planet Zebes: I dunno, the acid is kinda funny. It's not really funny when you're on the receiving end, but it's amusing to knock people down and watch the acid make them fly all the way up and turn into a star.

Super Smash Bros. Melee
Icicle Mountain: People tend to hate autoscrollers. I don't belong in that category of people. I quite enjoy them, even. The only one I hate is Rumble Falls, and it's mostly to due its awful thorns.

Kongo Jungle: The klaptraps and barrel could get annoying, but I'm ok with those really.

Yoshi's Island: I love its cramped nature. The Wii U version of it is one of my favorite stages, even.

Brinstar: I like this stage.

Flat Zone: It's amazing in 4 player Giant Melee.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Port Town Aero Dive: I agree the cars suck but I still like the rest of the stage.

Hanenbow: It's not a good stage but I don't find it particularly horrible either, despite its somewhat wonky stage layout.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS
Mute City: The stage is amusing for me.

Balloon Fight: I like it, even, despite the overpowered lightning bolts.

Wily Castle: I like the Yellow Devil, actually. It's great to see him explode and see Wario and Pac-Man caught up in his explosion. Same deal with the Wii U version.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
The Great Cave Offensive: The danger zones are too amusing for me to hate it, despite its sheer size and cramped nature.

Orbital Gate Assault: I really love the design of this stage, I think it's great, despite that it's essentially littered with stage hazards.

Gamer: I find this stage pretty fun to Smash in.

Entertainment & Media / Powerpuff Girls 2016
« on: May 30, 2016, 08:58:09 PM »
So...this show isn't really all that popular, basically being like slightly more toned down Teen Titans Go! but with Powerpuff Girls instead.

I don't know if I consider myself a fan of the Powerpuff Girls, but I did grow up with them, remember most Season 1-4 episodes of the original series, and enjoyed them, even today still. My favorite of the trio is Buttercup, I just really like her personality, bash first and ask questions later.

I've watched only the first episode of this show and I think it's fairly decent. However, I've only heard rumors of the other episodes and they sound pretty dang bad. Bubbles saying "Yasss" and "Me no Gusta"??? Twerking!??!? The girls also seem to be flanderized, so only one personality trait remains. Blossom became OCD-like, Bubbles became a young tween with memes, and Buttercup is always angry and a bully. The new voice actors do their job, but I do prefer the older ones, and the older ones were even sad that they don't get to reprise their roles. Some characters are outright missing such as Ms Bellum, and many of the older villains just seem to be...there.

I think the biggest problem with the show is that it doesn't know what it wants itself to be. It embraces too much of the old elements while having too much new elements as well. It tries to satisfy newcomers and veterans at the same time and pleases neither. It feels too much like a corporate product rather than an artistic, story-driven show. The Powerpuff Girls didn't even need a reboot but duh it sells merchandise due to its popularity so of course it got rebooted because give me money.

I don't think it's the worst show ever, but it's probably one of the most letdowns the Powerpuff Girls can receive, and it doesn't do their series any justice.

Resolved / Computer is prone to overheating when playing games
« on: January 19, 2016, 07:01:01 PM »
Ever since I received a new graphics card (a Nvidia Geforce GTX 960) to replace my old defunct AMD r9 series graphics card, the computer gets prone to overheating when running demanding applications. This is especially true when running Dolphin Emulator and it shut off once when Bazooka Mario and I were both playing Left 4 Dead 2 together. From what I've seen in the Core Temp application, it's the CPU that's overheating, and it shuts off when the temperatures hit around the 80 degrees Celsius mark. Disabling Dual Core play in Dolphin Emulator keeps the temperature at the 60-70 range, but it heavily slows emulation down.

I am still using a stock fan that was always there with my computer, should I get a better fan? And if so, what fan is recommended? Dusting the computer with a specifically-designed vacuum didn't cool the computer down. I do not overclock at all.

My CPU is an AMD FX-8350 Eight Core processor. Its idle temperature is fine (around 10-30 degrees) but running demanding applications like emulation and games bumps the temperature to the bad zone, around 70-80 degrees.

Off-subject Discussion / Total Supermoon Eclipse Tonight
« on: September 27, 2015, 03:48:20 PM »
There's going to be a lunar eclipse tonight, the last of the tetrad of them (four of them in the last 17 months). This time, however, it's going to occur when the moon is in a super moon state, that is, it's at its closest to Earth than its other cycles, thus making it appear larger and brighter than it usually is. The last supermoon lunar eclipse occurred in 1982, and the next won't occur until 2033.

If any of you is interested in seeing it, here's a guide of its start and end times, and regions where you can see it:

Basically, all of North and South America (barring parts of Canada and all of Alaska) and eastern Eurasia and most of Africa can see it.

New Horizons finally flew by Pluto and we finally got some cool high resolution pics of that former planet and its moons for the first time ever since it got discovered in 1930. This is a huge milestone in science.

The heart-shaped plain, named Tombaugh Reggio, after the man who discovered Pluto, is like a love-letter to astronomers for seeing it, lol.

Here's what they learned from this
*The surface is younger than previously thought, where it was assumed it would have tons of impact craters.
*Pluto has gigantic ice mountains that defy what we thought about the dwarf planet before. It also possibly indicates that there's water ice on Pluto.
*Charon, Pluto's moon, was also thought to be littered with impact craters, but is actually far younger than that.

Fan Creations / Spelunky HD-styled Baby Luigi sprite sheet
« on: May 15, 2015, 02:49:39 AM »
I'm pretty disappointed that most custom mods for Spelunky HD just use sprites from other games so I decided to make a Baby Luigi in style myself. Here's what I've got done so far...(wow I'm actually spriting again...)

All I did was draw Baby Luigi head and put it over Green's body and edited Green's body to make it look like Baby Luigi's.

Please excuse the large space, it will get filled up soon, sprite sheets have to be 1024 by 1024 in order to be usable by Spelunky. And the Volkswagen logo for the heart icon? Eh something random I threw in. If anyone doesn't like it I can replace it easily.

The random Baby Luigi heads are there because I keep them to make it easier to sprite and I forgot to hide them and didn't want to reupload the image without them so I left it like this.

Testing animation...

Feedback would be appreciated! Wish me luck, there's a ton of sprites to work with in this game and I really want to get this finished.

In this topic my twin and I will post Gmod screenshots with a ton of characters and stuff in them on a variable interval schedule if we can try.

here's the first one I'll showcase

See if you can spot all characters here. Hell sometimes even I can't spot all of them and I can't keep of a list of them.

I'd say Mario Sports Mix or Mario Tennis Open. Mario Tennis Open gets the edge for excluding someone, you know, but Sports Mix's character roster is also pret-ty bad since they made a ton of cuts, all who are Mario characters, while only including Toad and Slime.

Anyone wanna share their sour little thoughts? :P

Btw worst =/= disappointing. We all know that a 4 character roster made in the NES days are awful, today but you know, it was really reasonable and awesome at the time.
