Title: Super Mario Odyssey: Hint Hunt (Thanks for playing!)

Hint Hunt

Hi there, hunters. If you've played Super Mario Odyssey, you're probably aware of the 21 Hint Art pieces scattered around the various Kingdoms. These puzzles provide you with some sort of clue towards the location of a Power Moon, buried in the floor for you to ground pound 'em straight into your Moon collection.

Now, surely you want more of these peculiar pictures. "21? Is that it?" you say, fondly looking back at memories of the artful artworks. "I need to experience more of these disorienting dot-pngs! And trickier ones, too!"

What are the rules?
*On July 10th, I will send out 6 puzzles to the people who signed up. They would vary in complexity, from clues akin to normal Hint Arts, to puzzles with multiple steps. This ensures that players can choose how much they want to challenge themselves, while still offering simpler clues for those who want to go for easier points.
*The players will have two weeks to interpret the clues/puzzles, find the location, and take a snapshot of it to send to me as their answer. So, they'll have until July 24th to send everything in.
*Once the deadline hits, I will mark the answers and award correct answers with points after this deadline, with bonus points going to the people who solved the hints first.
*The players will have an intermission of sorts to work on any Awards Presentations and to watch the Awards Ceremony. I will distribute the other 6 puzzles on August 20th, and the players will have another week to solve them. Same rules as last time, and the deadline is August 27th. Again, I'll mark the answers shortly after that and award correct answers with points.
*Players will be ranked by how many points they scored, and tokens will be given out accordingly.

(A quick note- I've stated that there will be 6 puzzles per batch, with a total of 12 puzzles for the entire event. This may be subject to change; if I can make more than 12, I will, but this is a minimal estimation of what I can do within the time I have.)

What makes this trickier than the regular Hint Art?
There's going to be a bit more sleuthing this time round, perhaps even outside of the game. Most images wouldn't be simple abstract maps or cropped screenshots of the location. Some of them might not even be traditional images! For example, one puzzle could have you piece together a URL to a video containing the location, or another might require a search across this forum for a hidden message.

How will players be ranked, and how many tokens can I get?
I'll award 2 points for a correct answer and 1 point as a bonus for the first person to solve each puzzle. Once all the points have been given out, I'll distribute the tokens according to the point totals.

Spoiler: For example: (click to show/hide)

Edo, 22, and I are currently building an Odyssey photo scavenger hunt.  Would this be something too similar to that?  Or are these puzzles more than a hunt?

Like, this does seem a bit more complex.  Ours is more traditional, with a clue or phrase given and then people go and retrieve a photo of what they think will fulfill it.

Edo, 22, and I are currently building an Odyssey photo scavenger hunt.  Would this be something too similar to that?  Or are these puzzles more than a hunt?

I'd like to create a variation of puzzles. Some would require deciphering on the player's end, like solving an actual puzzle (like a wordsearch) for a clue, others would be tricky, abstract depictions of the location that the player would have to just look for in the game or try and recognise what the image is showing. Like the actual hint art, but perhaps more challenging.

Like, this does seem a bit more complex.  Ours is more traditional, with a clue or phrase given and then people go and retrieve a photo of what they think will fulfill it.

I'll try and simplify what the basis of the hunt is;
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Would your scavenger hunt be more about finding specific locations or finding items or enemies? If yours is location based, then we're basically trying to run the same event here. I'll assume you three have been working on it for longer than I have, so if it turns out that our plans are too similar I'll cancel this one. Thanks for letting me know.

Yep, after some very serious discussion with the man himself, we've decided that our events are distinct enough to co-exist. Nice! And if all goes to plan our events won't even overlap. Great!

Here's another thing: An example clue (and a walkthrough on how you would go about solving it). Excellent!

This is an example of a clue, and that's all you're going to need (and get) to sleuth out the location. If you want to try and solve it, go ahead; there's also a walkthrough in the spoiler box if you're more interested in that.

As I said before, not all puzzles will be like this. They'll vary in difficulty, some require multiple steps of thinking, others may not even be images. Again, if this is the sort of thing you'd be interested in, let me know!

The best and easiest way is to use a microSD card. Behind your Switch's kickstand is a slot for a microSD card, and if you slot it in when the Switch is off, then proceed to take screenshots, it'll save onto the microSD. If you don't have the money to buy a microSD, another option is uploading the screenshots to Facebook or Twitter through the Switch album itself, and from there you can go onto a PC and download them/copy their links.

If you use the microSD method, you'll have to upload the images to Imgur.

EDIT: Forgot to note that you'll need a microSD card slot in your PC, or if you have an SD card slot, a microSD to SD adapter.

Alright, we've had four days with three left, which puts us just over the halfway point.

I'm putting this reminder out because there are an alarmingly large group of people who I have received absolutely no input from. One person has given me an understandable explanation for being busy, but everyone else has been silent regarding this event.

Every hint I released has received at least one correct answer so far, so they're not impossible. So, I hope this coming weekend will give all users enough time to work on their answers, otherwise I'll have to take measures to make sure all the participants are able to participate.

How do I upload my own image to use in my posts, anyway?

If you don't have a microSD card, taking pictures from a phone or camera and uploading them to Imgur is fine, as long as the photos are clear.

After a bit of discussion about timings and busy lives, I've decided to increase the deadline by a week, making the new deadline July 24th. Hopefully those who weren't able to participate as much before have enough time to work on this with the extra time. I'll probably do the same with Round 2. Enjoy the ease!

E: I realise that if Round 2 were two weeks long it'd finish in September. In that case, Round 2 will probably last until August 31st if people need the time.

Now we're actually halfway there, rather than the fake halfway warning I posted earlier. Meaning, there's about a week left!

So, it's time for stats. Hints 2, 5 and 4 are the most popular and Hint 7 is the least popular. Hint 6 is also pretty barren in terms of answers. I'm going to give out some extra guidance on these last two hints because they are presumably pretty hard.

Spoiler: Hint 6 (click to show/hide)

Of course, you have the option to resubmit an answer if these extra hints make you doubt your current answer.

People have said they've enjoyed this, but I would like some extra feedback so I can make sure Round 2 is even better. So, please vote in the poll at the top of the topic. I look forward to seeing how everyone does in Round 2!

I personally voted for keeping the length, difficulty, and layering more or less the same. I thought that having a few more straightforward puzzles, like Hint 2 and Hint 5, which are highly accessible formats, gives some easier options for people to begin with while they mull over the more heavily layered puzzles. I'd say that Hint 4 more or less falls into that "starter" category, as well. Unlike the other two, that judgment is not so much about it being a common format as it's about it being less layered than most of the other hints.

Expanding on that, Hint 3 and Hint 7 seem to require a bit more puzzling out that the three aforementioned, but they aren't nearly as layered as Hint 1 and Hint 6. I personally think that having the puzzles in these "tier groups" makes the overall Hunt more accessible while still remaining challenging. Of course, a lot of this is subjective. I could see someone making an argument that, for example, Hint 7 is more on par with Hint 1 because of the specific location requirement and having to overlay the images, or that Hint 3 is more on par with Hint 4 because it doesn't have as many steps to go through once you have an idea of what it might be.

So, all in all, I thought the overall structure in terms of difficulty and length was quite fine. Again, these are subjective, so I wouldn't really on my word alone, but I thought having three lower difficulty puzzles, two medium difficulty puzzles, and two higher difficulty puzzles worked out well in terms of keeping it accessible but interesting. Of course, what's "easy, medium and high" is going to vary from person to person, but I think looking at it in terms of layering and number of steps required to solve the puzzles should work more or less as a stand-in for difficulty.

If any of this is unclear, I'd be happy to clarify or provide more feedback. All in all, I really enjoyed Round 1. Thank you, TPG!
Title: Re: Super Mario Odyssey: Hint Hunt (Answers!)

I got all of them right except only half credit for Hint 7, though my brother actually figured out Hint 3. I couldn't figure it out and I told him about it not expecting him to figure it out. But he did, and then I felt dumb for not realizing it.

I pretty much agree with Pitohui, though I wouldn't mind seeing maybe one more layered puzzle like Hints 1 and 6. Those were hard, but they were also a lot of fun to figure out. I felt like Hint 7 was a bit too confusing because even with the extra hint I still couldn't properly figure out how I was supposed to interpret the overlayed enemies. Perhaps that's my fault, but it sounds like several others failed to make the connection as well. In any case, those are just my thoughts.
Title: Re: Super Mario Odyssey: Hint Hunt (Answers!)

I only got hints 4 and 5 right, unfortunately.  I couldn't find hints 1, 3, 6, or 7.  I also attempted Hint 2 but was incorrect.

Still, it was fun.  Tough, sure, but the difficulty made it great.  Even if I could only find the downright obvious Hint 4 and the somewhat easy Hint 5.
Title: Re: Super Mario Odyssey: Hint Hunt (Answers!)

Hint 3 was the only one I didn't submit an answer for, though I figured out what Bitcats referred to just a bit too late. I was trying to link the shapes to regional coins and it made no sense because no 2 types of regional coin can be together. Once I thought of Cat Mario and Cat Peach I felt like a blithering idiot.

I think the hints were perfectly fine. Other than 3 which was me being an idiot, the only one I had issues with was 1, because as stated above, I thought the format for the word times was intentionally similar to how a YouTube url points to a timestamp. Maybe that was meant to be a red herring though?

Title: Re: Super Mario Odyssey: Hint Hunt (Answers!)

None of them require the game to be beaten or not. It might be easier to use a new save file for one of the hints, but it's absolutely possible on a beaten save file if you know what the hint's referring to.

Everything's been sent out now. The hunt is on!

To clarify, it's the same rules as last time- you can submit individual answers or multiple, and you can resubmit an answer if you wish.

In a few days, I'll add some extra clues to some of the less popular hints so don't worry if you're stuck on some of them. Have fun! :shy:

Last chance to get things sent in!

Let's be specific. I'll close everything up on August 31, 2018, 03:00:00 AM. A lot of people still have a chance of winning if they get the right answers!

And that's all. Thank you so much to everyone who participated.

Full numbers will be coming soon, but at this stage I can reveal the winner- Fawfulthegreat64! Congrats!

Here are those numbers that we all crave. The rule was, 1 point for nearly correct answers, 2 points for a correct answer, and 3 points for getting the answer first.

Congratulations to FTG, Luigi64DD and Nitwit for coming in the top three! But also, congratulations to everyone who got points- even the smallest of tokens can contribute to something. Either way, thank you to all the players! It was super fun making these and seeing what people came up with in response. I've been told that the puzzles were good, perhaps even great, but most importantly, they were puzzling. There's a couple of fixes I want to make for next year (which will likely be for a different game. We'll see.), namely removing any reliance on the English language to find answers. I didn't consider it for some hints, but now I'm perpetually considering it. All the time.

Another thing I'd like to do is what the crew did for the Odyssey Scavenger hunt, namely having the hints publicly posted rather than sent privately. However, you'll still have to sign up. Other ideas may arrive by next summer.

That's all from me. I'll be taking suggestions all year round, including which games to make puzzles from and any other specifics. Again, thank you for playing!

Will you be posting the answers to the second round and which ones people had (partially) correct?

It looks like I was the only one to get every answer at least partially correct (I'm guessing the one I only partially got right was Hint 7 of Round 1). Nice! Though FTG still beat me overall since he found 4 hints first while I found zero first. I should have known that always waiting till the last minute was a bad idea! :P

Yes to the first question, no to the second one. When I have the time I'll edit in the second answers, but attempting to format all the lists of answers and results and all has been unsuccessful and would probably take up more time than I'd like to give. Apologies!

wow i didnt expect to be so highly ranked! i guess doing a whole bunch of hints early on in round 1 really helped with that
now im really curious to see what the answers are for the second round. going by the numbers of what i got right in the first round and overall, i guess didnt get any fully correct during the second round, so i'll be interested to see what i did wrong there haha (no hurry though, take as much time as you need tpg)

anyway this was a really fun game. the puzzles were indeed quite puzzling, and there was a good range of difficulty so that everyone would be able to at least figure something out, and it was also quite creative in the variety of ways that hints were presented.

one last thing piece of feedback though, is that i feel like the amount of points for finding something first should be lower. i understand that it is good to give a bonus for those who get it first, but when that bonus is worth more than a correct answer by itself i feel like thats a little too much, and it puts people who aren't online at the time the hints arrive at a disadvantage. like its nice to get third but knowing that it only happened because i was online when you sent the hints and basically everyone else was offline makes it feel a little bit unfair to me

but yeah, overall very fun, would definitely play again if it appears next year
